"One Step Ahead" is a song by English singer-songwriter Nik Kershaw, released in 1989 as the lead single from his fourth studio album The Works. It was written by Kershaw, and produced by Julian Mendelsohn and Kershaw. A music video was filmed to promote the single,[1] and Kershaw also performed it on the Dutch TV show POP Formule.

"One Step Ahead" reached No. 55 in the UK and remained in the charts for two weeks. It would be Kershaw's last appearance on the UK singles chart until 1999's "Somebody Loves You".[2]

Background[]

In an interview around the time of the album's release, Kershaw said that he had originally traveled to Los Angeles to record The Works with producer Peter Wolf. Once completed, however, he was dissatisfied with the results and decided to continue working on it. He said: "Back home in England I listened to the album and discovered that I hated it. I could never have promoted that album. So I quickly wrote two more songs, among which was "One Step Ahead", and I did a lot all over again with Julian Mendelsohn in London. I must say that I'm a whole lot happier about it now."[3]
