The Our Lady of Good Voyage Cathedral[1] (Portuguese: Catedral Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem)[2] Also Belo Horizonte Cathedral[3] is a Catholic temple in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
History[]
Since the beginning of the eighteenth century, the site where today is the Cathedral of Our Lady of Good Voyage was occupied by Catholic buildings. In colonial times, the "king's building" was destroyed for the construction of Belo Horizonte, there was a chapel with adobe walls, which was replaced years later by a larger group.
On December 12, 1897, the Good Voyage church was destroyed, and in 1932, the present church was already built.
Construction began in 1913, and the style chosen was the neo-Gothic style. On February 11, 1921, before the work was finished, the church was transformed into a cathedral by the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte. In 1924 it became archbishopric.
The church was consecrated to Our Lady of Good Voyage as a result of a statue of her ladyship carved in wood which was considered the protector of a Portuguese ship named "Our Lady of Good Voyage". The statue resides at the right side corner of the cathedral's altar and measures a little more than half a meter. Nowadays the church is kept and administrated by the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament.
