History[]

Before 1774, Parikud was under the king of Bankad (now Banpur). As Bankara was always attacked by the East India Company, Raja of Bankad Sri Harisevak Mansingh first came to Parikud and established his capital known as Nrusinghgarh at Gurubai. Finally, Raja Bhagirathi Mansingh shifted his capital to Krishnaprasad and erected the royal palace in the year 1798. British rulers could not attack Parikud for many years, as the region was covered with Chilika Lake. There is a folktale about a milkman who informed the king about a crane killing an eagle. The king was inspired to shift his capital to Krishnaprasad. The king also donated a village for Brahmins (sasan), which is known as Bhagirathipur Sasan.

When the British invaded Odisha from the south in 1803, the traitor Fateh Muhammed, a ferry owner from Kandakhai (Malud), met them on the shores of Chilika Lake. He showed them the eastern route, by which they managed to reach Puri undetected. In, return, Fateh Muhammed was given freehold of the areas of Malud and Parikud, most of which is today called Garh Krishnaprasad.

Parikud is located in the present day Krushnaprasad Garh of district Puri, Odisha. It was founded by Late Raja Bhagirathi Mansingh, who was the nephew of Maharaja Harisevak. Late Maharaja Harisevak Mansingh of Bankargarh is currently known as Banpur, because he adopted him from his own brother. Banpur was previously known as Bankada garh which was than ruled by the Dynasty of the present king of Parikud who were attacked by British with the help of a tractor jagirdar (in records he is mentioned as Namak haraam jagirdar) of that time who helped British to attack the Banpur fort to kill the king and destroy the Banpur fort palace for helping the Paiko mutiny against British. The British captured and destroyed the fort of Banpur and killed most of the male members for the Royal family of Banpur (now Parikud family) for helping the first Paiko mutiny with horses, equipment and valuables. Most of the members of the Royal family were lucky enough to escape from Banpur with their children but unfortunately the king was captured and killed. They walked into Gurubai, which was next to Puri, and from there they than built their state in Parikud and shifted to protect it from British as Parikud was in between the lake. Still, the British tried again to enter Parikud through satpara but were drowned. The government has recovered swords and guns of the British Era from digging in the lake.

Royal family of Parikud Blessed by Maa kalijai Maa kalijai temple was built by Maharaj Jaganath Manasingh. During his period a lot of miracles happened. In early 17th century Maharaj of Bankuda garh now known as Banpur abandoned his fort at Bankaragarh and shifted to Parikud (he did this because before the 17th century, anyone who rose to the throne died within the year of his coronation.) But Maharaj Jagganath Mansingh who built the temple and worshiped Maa kalijai followed by a lot of miracle stories was the only king in the Parikud dynasty who lived for 79 years. He ruled from 1657-1736. Then 68 years later, with the blessings of Maa kalijai, the Dynasty sifted from Bankaragarh to parikud again followed by a miracle story. Thereafter, it is believed that the Royal family of Parikud is based on the blessings of four goddesses that are in four directions of the Parikud estate: Maa Bhagabati in Banpur, Maa kalijai in Chilika, Maa Charchika in Gurubai and Maa Kanak Durga & Maa Berejai in Krushna prasad. In these temple's Puja and festivals are still done in the name and Gotra of Parikud dynasty.

The 16th King Maharaj Bhagirat Manasingh built a most comfortable and modern palace with Italian tiles, Belgian glasses and England Marvels well known as Krushnaprasad palace, built in 1798. King George of Greece became the Honourable Guest of the then king of Parikud, which upset the British. Where it was difficult for the British to enter due to the Lake chilika. Rule of the Royal family started with out any interference over the territory for a long period. The chilika was a part of the Royal state of parikud which extended from kuhuri to Banpur to Gurubai to krushna prasad. The Dynasty of Parikud is based on the blessings of Goddess Maa kalijai. The palace is still intact. The Kalijai island is still with the Royal family of Parikud. Present H.T MAHARAJ SANTOSH CHANDRA DEO, coronation 2002 to the estate of Parikud.
