Philipp Kukura FRSC (born 26 March 1978 ) is a physical chemist who works as professor of biophysical chemistry at the University of Oxford, and is a fellow of Exeter College, Oxford.[2] Professor Kukura is head of an interdisciplinary research group that is focusing on the development and application of new optical methodologies for detecting, characterization and measurement of the molecular mass of individual biomolecules.[1]

Education and early life[]

He was born in Bratislava, then Czechoslovakia[3] in a family of Slovak actor Juraj Kukura. In 1984 the family emigrated to Germany, to Hamburg, where in 1998 young Kukura finished Wilhelm-Gymnasium obtaining the Abitur by passing the final exams.[2] In 2002 he graduated as Master of Chemistry at the University of Oxford. In 2006 he completed his PhD in Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry, University of California, Berkeley College of Chemistry.[1][2]

Career and research[]

After completing his PhD Philipp Kukura moved to Zürich. There he worked at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology as a postdoctoral research assistant under the supervision of professor Vahid Sandoghdar on nano-optics until 2010.[3] He returned to Oxford in 2010 to work initially as an EPSRC Career Acceleration Fellow. In 2011 he was elected to a tutorial fellowship at Exeter College.[3] Finally in 2016 has Philipp Kukura been promoted to Full Professor of Chemistry.[2]

In 2018 professor Philipp Kukura co-founded Refeyn Ltd., a society for mass photometry,[2] where he is non-executive Director.[4]
