Controversy[]

A number of notable incidents of racism have occurred at Pickerington High School North,[3] including two students (one Black and one white) who appeared having "former slave" and "former slave owner", respectively, painted on their backs during a football game in 2014,[4] a student who appeared in blackface captioning herself as "#n***amegan" on Snapchat in 2016, and yet another student appeared dressed as a member of the Ku Klux Klan in a Snapchat in 2016. The latter two incidents spurred a "cultural-sensitivity training" session.[5][6] However, in 2020, a school assembly which discussed police brutality and violence against Black people during Black History Month caused a number of parents of white students at the school to complain that the program was "politically charged". One such parent, Becky Tumidolsky, created a charge.org petition which garnered at least 170 signatures.[7]

Later, in June 2020, the Pickerington Local School District (PLSD) released a statement which noted continuing work to "[c]reate periodic open public forums in which all individuals are encouraged to freely discuss cultural, racial, and ethnicity issues that can provide insight and improve our ability to work together as a community."[8]

This followed another incident in 2020 wherein two Pickerington administrators were unequally disciplined for violating a PLSD social media policy. Charles E. Newman, a senior pastor at Antioch Baptist Church of Columbus and a Pickerington North High School graduate, noted "[w]hen we looked at both situations, the discipline was unequal". The first individual, a white woman named Ruth Stickel received a disciplinary letter after sharing an image on Facebook which read "Black Lives Matter is a leftist lie". The second individual, A Black woman named Damicka Bates, had posted a photograph of her daughter near anti-police graffiti in Columbus, Ohio, which resulted in her promotion to principal of a PLSD elementary school being reversed.[9]
