Ally Energy is an online workforce development platform for professionals working and seeking work in the global energy industry. Ally Energy was founded in 2014 in Houston, Texas, originally under the name Pink Petro. Ally Energy seeks to bring people, academics, companies, and other interested stakeholders together in the journey towards a new form of global energy production and consumption that is sustainable,[1] diverse, and inclusive.

The company's website focuses on listing both job opportunities in the energy sector worldwide and promoting upcoming energy-related events. It also provides resources that include career advice, industry insights, skills building, and networking opportunities.

Promoting equity and inclusion in the energy sector is an overall goal of Ally pursued by promoting the involvement of women in energy and the presence of other underrepresented talent pools.

Founder[]

Ally Energy was founded by Katie Mehnert, an energy executive with various companies including Enron, Duke Energy, Shell, Entergy, and BP. She received her education from Louisiana State University, Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business Executive Energy Education, and the Center for Houston's Future.

Mehnert has worked as a managing consultant within the energy industry from 1997–2004 and then joined BP taking on the role of culture, safety, and operational risk following the Deepwater Horizon oil explosion and spill off the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010. Mehnert left BP in 2014 and turned her efforts towards improving the opportunities for women in the energy industry[2] by launching the company. In 2020, she was appointed to work with the United States Department of Energy on its Equity and Energy initiative.[3]

Mehnert currently lives in Houston's Energy Corridor with her family.

History[]

The idea for Pink Petro began in 2013, aboard a Boeing 777 from London to Houston when Mehnert laid down her ideas on three cocktail napkins.[4] With support from Cindy Patman, a senior director of diversity and corporate affairs at Halliburton and support from Royal Dutch Shell, she launched an online platform based on cloud enterprise social technology from Jive Software. Then, the CEO of Jive, Elisa Steele created a partnership to launch the community. Former Houston Mayor, Annise Parker proclaimed Pink Petro Day on May 2, 2015 to celebrate with over 300 executives and professionals.[5] with the support of Shell, Halliburton, Jive Software and KPMG.[6][7][8][9][10]

In 2016, the HERWorld Energy Forum began in honor of International Women’s Day. In addition, Pink Petro held its first Annual Energy Forum. The Global Community Council was created–later to become the Ally Council–in order to discuss issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion.Pink Petro marked its first year with The HerWorld Energy Forum, on International Women’s Day, hosted at Halliburton headquarters in Houston and live-streamed around the globe.[11][12][13]

In March 2016, Pink Petro organized the HERWorld Energy Forum, a daylong conference on energy innovation, technology, policy and workforce. It was streamed across the globe with local events being coordinated by internal women’s networks at Halliburton, Shell, GE, KPMG, and Enbridge.[14] The conference grew in 2017 and attracted gender expert Josh Levs, media executive, Jeffrey W. Hayzlett, and former Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Commissioner, Vicky Bailey.

In 2018, the conference featured the first female NFL coach, Jennifer Welter, United States Department of Energy executive, Carol Battershell, and LeanIn.org founder and Facebook COO, Sheryl Sandberg. During the 2018 conference, Vice President of IHS Markit and CERA Week co-chairman James Rosenfeld expressed concerns to Bloomberg News that HERWorld was taking away from CERA Week which coincided on the same dates.[15]

In 2017, the first career site for women in energy, Experience Energy, was born with the platform hosting almost 500 jobs. The Annual Energy Forum was held with 10,000 people online and an additional ten more corporate members joined the Global Community Council. Emerson teamed up with Pink Petro to support women professionals in the energy industry.[16] In 2018, NES Global Talent joined Pink Petro along with ExxonMobil, Anadarko and Wood Mackenzie.

In 2020, Pink Petro and the Experience Energy brands were retired, and Ally Energy was born. Ally Energy produced 200 online events to thousands during the year and the Voices of Energy podcast was launched.

In 2021, Ally Energy acquired Clean Energy Social[17] expanding its diversity equity and inclusion platform to include analytics that can be helpful to hiring managers.
