The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are a pair of Android smartphones designed, developed, and marketed by Google as part of the Google Pixel product line. They collectively serve as the successor to the Pixel 5. They were officially announced on October 19, 2021, at the "Pixel Fall Launch" event and were released in the United States on October 28.

History[]

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro were previewed by Google on August 2, 2021, which confirmed the phones' new designs and the introduction of its custom Tensor system on a chip (SoC).[10][11] Previous Pixel devices had used chips from Qualcomm, with Google having begun developing its own chips (codenamed Whitechapel) in as early as 2016.[12][13][14] The chip is named after both Google's TensorFlow and Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) technologies.[5] Despite being marketed as developed by Google, close-up examinations reveal that the chip contains numerous similarities with Samsung's Exynos series.[15][16] A successor to the chip was reported to be in development by October 2021, believed to be for the Pixel 7.[17]

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro were officially announced on October 19, 2021, at the "Pixel Fall Launch" event,[18] and became available in nine countries on October 28.[19][20] The phones were not made available in India at launch due to supply chain issues.[21] During the launch event, Google also announced the phones' official cases, which went on sale on the same day with three color options per phone,[22] as well as the second-generation Pixel Stand wireless charger, which went on sale on November 18 and began shipping on December 13.[23][24] Pre-orders for the phones began on the same day as the announcement,[25] with shipping commencing on October 25.[26] The Google Store did not offer any discounts for the devices on Black Friday, a departure from prior years.[27] On February 3, 2022, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro became available in Italy and Spain in "limited quantities",[28] with a limited launch in Singapore following on February 15.[29]

Specifications[]

Design[]

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro both feature a unique new design that is visually distinct from previous-generation Pixel phones, including a large camera bar and two-tone color scheme on the back.[30] The front of both phones also feature a centered hole-punch display notch.[10] They are each available in three colors:[31]

Hardware[]

The Pixel 6 has a 6.4 in (160 mm) FHD+ 1080p OLED display at 411 ppi with a 1080 × 2400 pixel resolution and a 20:9 ratio,[8] while the Pixel 6 Pro has a 6.7 in (170 mm) QHD+ 1440p LTPO OLED display at 512 ppi with a 1440 × 3120 pixel resolution and a 19.5:9 ratio.[9] Both displays have HDR10+ support; the Pixel 6 has a 90 Hz refresh rate and the Pixel 6 Pro has a 120 Hz variable refresh rate. Both phones contain a 50 megapixel wide rear camera and a 12 megapixel ultrawide rear camera, with the Pixel 6 Pro featuring an additional 48 megapixel telephoto rear camera. The front camera on the Pixel 6 contains an 8 megapixel wide lens, while the one on the Pixel 6 Pro contains a 11.1 megapixel ultrawide lens.[32] The new Tensor chip also brought Live HDR+ to video as well as enhancements to the Night Sight and Super Res Zoom features on the devices.[33]

The Pixel 6 has a 4614 mAh battery, while the Pixel 6 Pro has a 5003 mAh battery. Both phones support fast charging, Qi wireless charging, as well as reverse wireless charging.[8][9] The Pixel 6 is available in 128 or 256 GB of storage and 8 GB of RAM, and the Pixel 6 Pro is available in 128, 256, or 512 GB of storage and 12 GB of RAM. In addition to the ARM-based Tensor chip, both phones are also equipped with the Titan M2 security module, which is based on the RISC-V open standard, along with an under-display optical fingerprint scanner, stereo speakers, and Gorilla Glass Victus.[34][35]

Software[]

As with prior generations of the Pixel phone, Google placed heavy emphasis on artificial intelligence and ambient computing capabilities during the Pixel Fall Launch event, debuting features such as Magic Eraser, Face Unblur, Motion Mode, Real Tone, Direct My Call, Wait Times, and Live Translate.[36][32][37] Additionally, Assistant voice typing and grammar correction serve as exclusive features on the Pixel 6 series,[38][39] while Google Pay's digital car key feature launched first on the Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy S21 in November.[40] Material You, a more personalized variant of Google's Material Design design language, was also a major focus in Google's marketing efforts.[41]

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro shipped with Android 12 and version 8.4 of the Google Camera app at launch.[42][43] It will at least receive three years of major OS upgrades with support extending to 2024, and at least five years of security updates with support extending to 2026.[42] The Pixel Fall Launch event coincided with the release of Android 12 for older Pixel phones, along with the introduction of the Security Sub and Privacy Dashboard.[44][45] Google also announced Pixel Pass, a subscription bundle similar to Apple One and Xbox All Access which bundles the Pixel 6 series with Google One, YouTube Premium, YouTube Music Premium, Google Play Pass, and extended warranty.[46]

Marketing[]

Google kickstarted the phones' marketing campaign early, beginning with online videos,[47][48] billboards in major cities,[49][50] and magazine advertisements in September.[51] Additionally, the company partnered with Channel 4,[52] the NBA,[53] and Snapchat to promote the phones.[54] Models of the phones were also available on display at the Google Store Chelsea in New York City prior to the launch event.[55][56] Google CFO Ruth Porat had previously revealed during Alphabet Inc.'s quarterly earnings investor call in August that the company was planning to substantially increase its marketing and sales expenses in anticipation for the phones' launch, while Google hardware chief Rick Osterloh declared their intention to "invest in marketing".[10]

In November 2021, it was announced that actor Simu Liu, who portrays Shang-Chi in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, would serve as the Pixel 6's brand ambassador in Canada,[57] days after Liu shot a video as part of Google TV's "Watch with Me" marketing campaign.[58] NBA athletes Giannis Antetokounmpo and Magic Johnson also serve as brand ambassadors for the phones,[59][60] as with tennis player Leylah Fernandez in Canada.[61][62] In February 2022, Google released a commercial featuring an unreleased song by American singer Lizzo titled "If You Love Me" ahead of its airing during Super Bowl LVI, advertising the Pixel 6's Real Tone feature.[63] Directed by Joshua Kissi and created in collaboration with advertising agency Gut Miami,[64] the 60-second advertisement marked the company's first Pixel-related Super Bowl spot.[65] Other promotions include Pixel 6 socks and a Tensor sticker for "Pixel Superfans",[66] as well as a Pixel 6-themed Tarot deck for #TeamPixel members ahead of Christmas.[67]

Reception[]

Critical reception[]

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro received much attention prior to its launch, with many commentators highlighting the potential of its Tensor chip and the debut of Android 12, opining it to be "more exciting" than Apple's iPhone 13.[68][69][70] Commentators also noted the increased anticipation of the Pixel in comparison to earlier generations of the Pixel smartphone line, attributing this to Google's premature reveal of the device and the announcement of the Tensor chip.[71][72][73]

Both phones received generally positive reviews following its release. Its camera capabilities, unique design, and performance of the Tensor chip were widely praised,[74][75][76][77] though the speed of the fingerprint reader and exclusion of the phone charger were criticized.[78][79][80] Critics also highlighted the phones' premium specifications and affordable pricing,[81][82][83][84] while the battery life and protrusion of the camera bar received mixed reactions.[75][85][86][87]

Commercial reception[]

Google accommodated the increased interest for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro by signing partnership agreements with more than 45 wireless carriers as well as retailers across nine countries.[88] The company also doubled the production of its phones compared to last year in attempt to boost its market share, manufacturing approximately 7 million devices.[89] Shortly after the phones became available for pre-order, both the online Google Store and the Google Fi store suffered temporary outages.[90] Google also attributed delayed shipping times for the Pro model to unexpectedly high demand on the Google Store,[91][92] with other carriers also facing shipping delays.[93]

In December 2021, a report indicated that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro experienced greater carrier sales numbers during its first month of availability in comparison to prior models,[94] while smartphone accessory manufacturer Bellroy announced that its phone cases for the Pixel 6 series was its most popular product of all time.[95] During Alphabet Inc.'s quarterly earings investor call in February 2022, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai touted "record" sales numbers for the company's 2021 Pixel phones, especially the Pixel 6 series;[96] however, a later study conducted by Counterpoint Research revealed that the Pixel line may have only experienced moderate year-over-year growth in comparison to the Pixel 5.[97]

Software issues[]

In October 2021, some early buyers reported that their phone screens exhibited a "display flicker" bug when pressing the power button with the phone turned off.[98] The issue was fixed by a software patch in December.[99] The next month, some users reported that the fingerprint scanner would stop working when they change the phone's animation speed or the phone drains its battery,[100][101] while other units could be unlocked by fingerprints not registered on the device.[102] Google attributed the perceived slow speed of the scanner to security reasons,[103] and rolled out an update later that month addressing some of the issues.[104] Meanwhile, reports circulated that the Google Assistant was randomly placing calls to individuals in users' contacts list,[105][106] an issue that was fixed shortly afterward.[107][108] Another bug in the Google Photos app caused the Magic Eraser feature to disappear from some devices,[109] which Google fixed in February 2022.[110]

In December 2021, Google's monthly software update for Pixel devices caused network connectivity issues for some users in Europe.[111] Google began testing fixes for the problem later that month,[112] later pausing the rollout out of the update amidst reports of calls being dropped or disconnected and eventually completely delisting it.[113][114] Meanwhile, another bug in the update forced Google to disable the Call Screen and Hold For Me features on some Pixel 6 devices.[115] In February 2022, numerous users reported Wi-Fi issues following another monthly update,[116] with a fix to be released the next month.[117]
