Plaza Vea is a Peruvian supermarket chain owned by Supermercados Peruanos S.A., a subsidiary of Intercorp, which is the second largest retail company in that country, and also owns other large supermarket chains such as Vivanda. It is also the largest in the country, with 103 stores countrywide.^[2]

History[]

The history of Plaza Vea begins in 1993, when Chilean retailer Santa Isabel started operating in Peru, in the district of San Borja, following the closure of Scala Gigante, a former well-known local chain, and former tenant of the property. In the following years, the supermarket would expand to other locations within the capital city.

In 2001, the company was purchased by Argentine-Dutch Disco-Ahold Peru and where new establishments were inaugurated, this time with larger sizes of 4,000 m² (43,000 sq ft). In 2003, ownership was transferred to Peruvian company Intercorp, a subsidiary of Interbank.

By 2007, the supermarket chain had already expanded to several establishments in Lima to compete with other chains, and in the same year began operations in the rest of the country. The first supermarket to open during this period was in Trujillo, being followed by Chiclayo, Callao, Huancayo, Ica, and Arequipa.

Today, the company operates over 100 stores countrywide, making it the largest in the country.

Operating divisions[]

The supermarket chain operates under three different retail formats, depending on the location.

Plaza Vea Hiper[]

These stores (which also operate without the "Hiper" subtitle) are the biggest in the company, and are hypermarkets, occupying over 5,000 m2. They serve higher and middle income areas. They carry a large section of food and non-food products, including electronics and clothes. The first store was opened in 2001, at the Jockey Plaza Shopping Center. The largest store under this label is located in Trujillo, where it occupies 10,000 m² (110,000 sq ft).

Until January 1, 2018, there are 43 Hiper stores in Lima and Callao, as well as 32 stores in other cities.

Plaza Vea Super[]

Super stores are medium-sized, and serve middle to lower income areas. Until January 1, 2018, there are 20 stores in Lima and Callao, as well as 6 stores in other cities.

Plaza Vea Express[]

Express stores function as (somewhat large) convenience stores. Only two stores exist. Both are located in Lima, having opened in 2011, and both are former Mass stores.
