Political families of India

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

India is a parliamentary democracy, but the country's politics has become increasingly dynastic, possibly due to the absence of party organizations, independent civil society associations that mobilize support for the party, and centralized financing of elections.[1] The dynastic phenomenon is present at national, state, regional, and district levels. The Nehru–Gandhi family produced three Indian prime ministers. Family members have also led the Congress party for most of the period since 1978, when Indira Gandhi floated the Congress(I) faction of the party.[2] The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also has several senior leaders who are dynasts. Besides the major national parties, other national and regional parties such as Shiromani Akali Dal, Shiv Sena, Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Janata Dal Secular, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Jammu & Kashmir National Conference, AIMIM, and Nationalist Congress Party are also dominated by dynasts.[3][4]

This is a partial listing of prominent political families of India.

Nehru–Gandhi family - INC []

The Nehru family's (often called Nehru–Gandhi family) involvement with the Congress party started with Motilal Nehru in the 1920s when India was still part of the British empire. The family became more influential under his son, Jawaharlal Nehru, who emerged as a prominent figure in India's nationalist movement. After Nehru's death, his daughter, Indira Gandhi, became his political heir (her Gandhi surname came from her husband Feroze Gandhi's name, and not from Mahatma Gandhi. The Nehru-Gandhi dynasty has dominated the Congress Party since the Indian independence in 1947.[5] Recent developments, however, indicate some setbacks such as the crushing defeat of the Congress Party in the 2014 elections and a series of top-level defections such as those in states like Maharashtra, Assam, West Bengal, and Jammu and Kashmir.[6] The dynasty is strongly embedded in the Indian polity that the name continues to have an instinctive hold on loyalties of so many voters.[7]
