Poonguzhali

Poonguzhali is a fictional character of a Tamil historical novel Ponniyin Selvan by Kalki Krishnamurthy. She was the wife of Senthan Amuthan later became Uttama Chola. Their marriage makes Poonguzhali aunt of Arulmozhi varman. She is friend of Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan who is one of the Protaganist in the Novel. Poonguzhali is the niece of Mandakini Devi.

Early life[]

Poonguzhali was born in Ariyalur, a territory of the Chola Empire. Her father was a boat man and so she was. Her main occupation was to sail in the sea with her boat. She desires to be alone so, she often sails to Sri Lanka without informing her father. In Sri Lanka she visits her aunt Mandakini Devi who is living alone in a deserted island. And she also goes to Marshland in night and she calls the bubbles coming out from the marshland as her lover. The relationship between her sister-in-law is not good.

Adventures[]

Her adventures began when she met Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan. She rowed with him to Eelam to meet Arulmozhi varman. Later on the way back from Eelam she rescued Arulmozhi varman and Vallavarayan Vandhiyathevan from drowning in the Indian Ocean as their ship met with a storm. And her adventures continues as she tries to save her aunt Mandakini Devi who was kidnapped by Aniruddha Brahmarayar to bring her to the Chola Emperor Sundara Chola.

Royal throne[]

Poonguzhali married Senthan Amuthan, later known as Madhurandhaka Uttama Chola. After the assassination of Aditya Karikalan or Aditya II, people wanted Arulmozhi varman to be king. But Arulmozhi varman pointed to Uththama Chola to be the king as it was moral. And so Poongzhali became Queen.
