Qasım Khan (Azerbaijani: Qasım xan Xançobanlı) was the 7th Azerbaijani[citation needed] Shirvan Khan from 1789 to 1792.

Biography[]

He was born in 1763 in Ağsu. He was the son of Mohammad Said Khan and Mahpari Khanum (died 1790). Gasim Khan also spent the first part of his life with his brother Asgar Khan and his cousin Mustafa Khan, respectively, in the captivity of Shaki Khan Mahammad Hasan Khan, in Karabakh and in the Ottoman land of Akhalkalaki. In 1790, after the overthrow of Asgar Khan by Shirvan ayans, he was in power for 2 years. From the beginning of 1792, the nobles of Shirvan began to resent him. According to Abbasgulu aga Baki Khanov, the reason for the resentment was the lack of distinction between the subjects and the use of Lezgian military force instead of relying on the people of Shirvan. Finally, in 1792, he was overthrown by Yuzbashi bey Hovzi, the deputy of Hovz district, and Omar Sadari, the deputy of Sardar district. Instead, his cousin Mustafa bey Alvand was invited to Agsu. Mustafa Khan became the Khan of Shirvan. Qasim Khan and his supporters retreated to QasimKhan fortress, from where he went to Quba Khanate.[1][2]

In 1794, Mahammad Hasan Khan, Quba Khan Sheykhali Khan and Qasim Khan, who claimed the Shirvan Khanate, attacked Agsu together. Agsu was under siege for several months. One day it rained heavily and the flood destroyed most of the tents. The situation of the army deteriorated. The besieged people, led by the deputy of the Sardar district, Omar Sultan, attacked the besiegers. Sheykhali Khan and Mahammad Hasan Khan returned to their Khanates. Qasim Khan settled on Garaburga mountain between Quba and Shaki. In 1795, during Valerian Zubov's march, Gasim Khan, with the help of Yuzbashi Bey, the deputy of Hovz district, descended from Garaburga mountain and came to Count Valerian Zubov, who had encamped near the city of Agsu. Count Valerian Zubov recognized him as Shirvan Khan instead of Mustafa Khan. Qasim Khan, who became Khan again, remained in power until 1796. After the attack of Agha Mahammad Shah Qajar, he was again replaced by Mustafa Khan. After Mustafa Khan accepted the power of the Russian Empire, relations with Qasim Khan normalized, and Qasim Khan accompanied Mustafa Khan during his emigration to Iran. After Mustafa Khan's return to Shirvan in 1831, Qasim Khan's family also returned.[3]
