Rúben Gonçalo da Silva Nascimento Vinagre (born 9 April 1999) is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays as a left wing-back for Sporting CP, on loan from Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Career[]

Early career[]

Vinagre began his career in the academy system of Sporting CP before joining Ligue 1 club AS Monaco in summer 2015.[2] After spending his first season solely in the club's youth side, he signed a professional contract in June 2016.[3]

During the summer of 2016, Vinagre featured in five matches of the Portuguese under-17 national team's success at the UEFA European Championship in Azerbaijan, where they won the tournament after defeating Spain on penalties in the final.[4]

In August 2016, a deal was agreed for Vinagre to be loaned to Portuguese Second Division side Académica de Coimbra to gain experience,[5] but FIFA, whose approval was required due to the player being under age 18, refused to sanction the deal.[6] After an unsuccessful appeal, Vinagre returned to his parent club in January 2017 without making any appearances for Académica.[7]

Wolverhampton Wanderers[]

In June 2017, Vinagre signed a new contract with Monaco due to last until summer 2022.[8] Shortly after, he moved on a season-long loan to English side Wolverhampton Wanderers for the 2017–18 season.[9] He made his senior debut on 8 August 2017 in an EFL Cup victory against Yeovil Town.[10] On 30 September 2017, Vinagre scored his first goal in professional football, scoring the third goal during Wolves's 4–0 win at Burton Albion.[11]

Following the club's promotion to the Premier League, Vinagre signed a five-year-contract for an undisclosed fee on 30 June 2018.[12] The recruitment of Jonny meant however that Vinagre was primarily used as a back-up player, but still made 13 appearances as the club qualified for Europe through a 7th place finish.

On 25 July 2019, Vinagre made his debut appearance in UEFA European club competition in Wolves's 2–0 home win against Crusaders in the 2019–20 UEFA Europa League second qualifying round,[13] and scored his first goal at European club competition level in the process. After first choice left-back Jonny sustained an injury in a knockout tie against Olympiacos, Vinagre was part of the Wolves' team that reached the quarter-finals of the competition, where he played the full match of their defeat to eventual winners Sevilla.

During the summer 2020 transfer window, Wolves acquired further players in defence and Vinagre was allowed to move on a season-long loan to Greek side Olympiacos on 5 October, with the club having the option to make the deal permanent.[14]

However, on 4 January 2021, Vinagre was recalled from Olympiacos, after failing to impress Pedro Martins' side, only playing 2 league games. He would move to Famalicão for the remainder on the season, where he would rejoin fellow Wolves players Bruno Jordão and Leonardo Campana, who were also on loan at the club.[15]
