Production[]

The story of Raksha Bandhan is written by its director Aanand L. Rai's frequent writer Himanshu Sharma, and Kanika Dhillon also co-wrote the script.[7] Revolving around the relation between brother-sister, the film was officially announced on 3 August 2020 to mark the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.[8][9] Lead actor Akshay Kumar stated that Raksha Bandhan is the quickest film he has signed in his career, and dedicated the film to his sister Alka Hiranandani.[10] The film is jointly produced by Rai, Hiranandani and Zee Studios.[11]

Akshay Kumar was signed to enact the male lead; it is his second collaboration with Rai post Atrangi Re (2021).[12] On 9 June 2021, Kumar revealed that Bhumi Pednekar will be the female lead.[13] On 21 June (when the film shoot begun), the film's entire cast of Sahejmeen Kaur, Deepika Khanna, Sadia Khateeb and Smrithi Srikanth was announced.[14][15]

Principal photography of the film commenced on 21 June 2021.[16][17] The film was wrapped up in Delhi on 12 October 2021.[18][19][20]

Release[]

The film was originally scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on 5 November 2021 on the occasion of Diwali, but the release has now been deferred due to COVID-19 pandemic which caused a delay in its pre-production and other important works.[21] The film will theatrically release on 11 August 2022.[1]
