Rebellion (2022) is an upcoming professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by Impact Wrestling. It will take place on April 23, 2022, at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, New York. It will be the fourth event under the Rebellion chronology.

Production[]

Background[]

Rebellion is a professional wrestling event produced by Impact Wrestling. It is annually held during the month of April, and the event was first held in 2019. At Hard To Kill, Impact Wrestling announced Rebellion would take place in on April 23, 2022, at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, New York.[1]

Storylines[]

The event will feature several professional wrestling matches, which involve different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plots, and storylines. Wrestlers portray heroes, villains, or less distinguishable characters in scripted events that build tension and culminate in a wrestling match or series of matches. Storylines are produced on Impact's weekly television program.[2]

At Bound for Glory, in October 2021, Josh Alexander defeated Christian Cage to win the Impact World Championship. While Alexander was celebrating with his family, Moose, who earlier won the Call Your Shot Gauntlet match, ambushed him and invoked his opportunity, immediately capturing the title.[3][4] In the following months, Alexander would go on a rampage, wanting to get his hands on Moose, but was repeatedly denied by Impact Executive Vice President, Scott D'Amore. On the February 10, 2022 episode of Impact!, Alexander defeated Big Kon, but continued to punish him after the bell. Security would try to intervene, but Alexander would push them away, and he even pushed D'Amore to the ground when he tried to stop Alexander. As a result, D'Amore would send Alexander home,[5][6] as a kayfabe explanation for Alexander's contract and work visa expiring.[7][8] At Sacrifice, after Moose retained the Impact World Championship against Heath,[9] Alexander made his return to attack Moose, and announced that he had signed a new multi-year Impact contract, and that he finally signed his rematch clause for the main event of Rebellion.[10][11]

On March 8, Impact Wrestling announced that Trey Miguel will defend the Impact X Division Championship in a three-way match at Rebellion, with two other three-way matches to take place on following episodes of Impact! to determine his challengers.[12] Ace Austin and Mike Bailey qualified for the three-way match by defeating Crazzy Steve and John Skyler,[13][14] and Laredo Kid and Willie Mack, respectively.[15]

After Josh Alexander was sent home by Scott D'Amore, Team Impact (Eddie Edwards, Rich Swann, Chris Sabin, and Rhino) elected ROH World Champion Jonathan Gresham to take his place in their match against Honor No More (Matt Taven, Mike Bennett, Kenny King, PCO, and Vincent) at No Surrender. However, Gresham was found laid out backstage, so Steve Maclin took the final spot[5][6] (with Willie Mack taking Edwards' place when Edwards was attacked at the event). However, Edwards ended up betraying Team Impact, allowing Honor No More to get the win.[16][17] On March 25, it was announced that Gresham will face off with Edwards at Rebellion.[18]

At Sacrifice, Violent By Design (Eric Young and Joe Doering) defeated The Good Brothers (Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson) to regain the Impact World Tag Team Championship.[9] On the March 17 episode of Impact!, The Good Brothers heckled Scott D'Amore for a rematch, which they got in the form of a lumberjack match for next week. In addition, D'Amore announced that whoever would be champion after that match would defend against their opponents, as well as the teams serving as lumberjacks, in an Eight-Man Tag Team Elimination Challenge at Rebellion.[13][14] Those teams would be: Decay (Black Taurus and Crazzy Steve), Heath and Rhino, Rich Swann and Willie Mack, The Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin), The Bey and Jay Connection (Chris Bey and Jay White), and Honor No More (Matt Taven, Mike Bennett, Kenny King, and/or Vincent). VBD would end up retaining against The Good Brothers, meaning they will be defending champions heading into Rebellion.[15]
