Reddit Public Access Network, commonly known as RPAN, is a live streaming service run by Reddit.[1] Every broadcaster is given a three-hour limit on broadcasting; however, this time limit can be extended if streamers receive Awards from other users.[2] The viewers can interact with streams by upvoting or downvoting, chatting and by giving paid awards. During the off-air hours, 24/7 streaming is possible to the dedicated subreddits, but with limited slots and capabilities.[3]

History[]

On August 19, 2019, Reddit announced RPAN. It was said to be in testing, but they were experimenting with making it a permanent program, as well as a way to increase revenue for the platform.[4]

Later, a five-day testing period began. During the testing period, streaming was for a select group of users, allowing 30 minutes of streaming per person and 100 slots.[5] Everyone who participated in the test also received a trophy that can be viewed on the user's profile.

On March 3, 2020, the expansion to different subreddits was announced and later on March 10, more subreddits were announced.[6][7]

Later on April 15, the ability to give awards to expand the broadcast time was introduced. The price of the award influences the amount of time added, so awards that cost a few cents add only a few seconds to the broadcast time, but the larger awards can expand the time by 5 minutes and more.[2]

On July 1, 2020, RPAN Studio was released, an application that allows users to broadcast live from desktop computers. RPAN Studio has been built on top of OBS, an open-source streaming and recording program.[8]

On August 19, 2020, Reddit temporarily increased streaming times to two hours and allowed broadcasts in full HD to celebrate the platform turning one year old.[9]

On January 13, 2021 Reddit introduced the ability for users to sign up to receive notifications when streamers they follow go live.[10]

On January 28, 2021 Reddit permanently increased streaming times to three hours.[11]

Broadcasting is being rolled out to more and more subreddits, but the following are the official RPAN subreddits:
