Detmers was born in Springfield, Illinois, and grew up in Nokomis, Illinois, and originally attended Nokomis High School. He made the varsity baseball team as a freshman and was named All-Prairie State Conference all three years he was on the team. He committed to play college baseball at Louisville going into his junior season over offers from Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri.[1][2] As a junior, Detmers was named first team All-State after posting an 8-1 record with a 1.16 earned run averaged and struck out 117 batters. Following the season and being recruited by Glenwood High School, Detmers' family moved to Chatham, Illinois after his mother started a new job and he transferred to Glenwood High School for his senior year.[3] Detmers went 9-1 with a 0.84 ERA and 153 strikeouts as a senior and was again named first team All-State and was named a Medium School All-American by MaxPreps.[4] Detmers was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 32nd round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft, but opted not to sign a contract and attend Louisville.[5][6]

Detmers went 4-2 with a 4.85 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 55.2 innings pitched as a true freshman.[7] He spent the following summer playing for the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod Baseball League, where he focused on correcting his mechanics.[8][9] Detmers was named the Cardinals' Friday night starter going into his sophomore year.[10] He finished the season with 2.78 ERA and 167 strikeouts in 113.1 innings and tied the school record for wins in a season with 13 to four losses and was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Year, first team All-ACC, a first team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.[11][12][13] In 2019, He was selected for United States collegiate national team.[14]

Detmers entered his junior season on the watch list for the Golden Spikes Award and as a top prospect for the 2020 Major League Baseball draft.[15] Detmers went 4-0 with a 1.23 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 22 innings pitched before the season was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic.[16]
