Ricardo Blázquez Pérez (Spanish pronunciation: [riˈkaɾðo ˈβlaθkeθ ˈpeɾeθ]; born 13 April 1942) is a Spanish prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He has served as Archbishop of Valladolid since 2010. He has been a bishop since 1988 and was made a cardinal in 2015.

Biography[]

Ricardo Blázquez Pérez was born in Villaneuva del Campillo (Avila) on 13 April 1942. He studied in the seminaries of Avila from 1955 to 1967 and earned a doctorate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University where he studied from 1967 to 1972. He was ordained a priest on 18 February 1967.^[1]

From 1972 to 1974 he served as secretary of the Theological Institute of Avila. From 1974 to 1988 he was a professor and then from 1978 to 1981 the dean of the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical University of Salamanca. He was Grand Chancellor there from 2000 to 2004.^[1]

He was named an auxiliary bishop of Santiago de Compostela and assigned the titular see of Germa di Galazia on 8 April 1988.^[2] He received his episcopal consecration on 29 May 1988 from Cardinal Antonio Rouco Varela.

On 26 May 1992 Pope John Paul II named him Bishop of Palencia,^[3] and on 8 September 1995 Bishop of Bilbao.^[4]

On 13 March 2010, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Archbishop of Valladolid.^[1]

He has served on various commissions within the Bishops’ Conference of Spain including the Doctrine of the Faith, the Liturgical Commission and the Commission for Interconfessional Relations.
