Richard Tolkien

Richard Tolkien is a corporate financier, sailor and charity trustee.

He was educated at King Edward VI School, Totnes and Exeter College, Oxford, graduating with a first in PPE in 1977.

He started his career at HM Treasury serving from 1977 to 1982, including 21/2 years as Assistant Private Secretary to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Geoffrey Howe.

He started his corporate finance career with Morgan Grenfell where he was appointed a director in 1992, before moving to HSBC in 1997 where he was Managing Director and became an Executive Director of Macquarie Bank in 2003.

After 25 very full time years of investment banking he became an independent expert witness in arbitrations and litigation and has advised on numerous cases in the UK and internationally.

He was the senior non- executive director of Share plc (2003- 2020) and the Parkwood Group plc (2006- 2014).

Today he is a Trustee and the Chairman of Stoke Mandeville Spinal Research (from 2010) and the Treasurer of St John’s Church, Boldre.

When time has permitted he sails and has completed a number of short – handed ocean races including the Round Britain race, OSTAR, the Route du Rhum and Transat Jacques Vabre.

He has with his late wife Sally two children, a lawyer and an acoustic engineer.

He has a long standing interest in public life and good journalism.
