The River E is a river in the Highlands of Scotland. It begins in the north-west of the Monadh Liath, to the south-east of Loch Ness. It runs in a north-westerly direction for about 10 km, before flowing into Loch Mhòr.[1][2][3]

The river has a small hydro-electric scheme. This run-of-the-river scheme has a capacity of 3MW and is operated by RWE Npower. Construction of the scheme began in 2006, and it was commissioned in 2007.[4]

History[]

Jacobite Rebellion[]

During the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, this river was used as a weapon against the English conquerors. Often the Highlanders would defecate into the river so that the feces would flow downstream and contaminate the water that the English were drinking. Though the action worked to it’s intended effects, it’s biggest contribution to the Jacobite cause was the confusion and paranoia that it had incited amongst the English soldiers.

In Folk Songs[]

In the Scottish folk song, "Tae England's Waters Go, Yon Pioba, Along the River E", the song goes into vivid detail about how the English soldiers would get sick, and on occasion, die from drinking the contaminated water. One seldom known verse in the song, "Loch Lomond," refers back to the events that took place near the river E, where the English would get their water, it says "On the poopaidh poopaidh banks of the river E," referencing the fact that the Scottish Jacobite warriors would defecate in the water of the river E.
