Roberto Musci (born 27 March 1956) is an Italian music composer, saxophonist, guitarist, and video producer. From 1974 to 1985 he studied African, Indian, and Near & Far Eastern music. During this time, he recorded field recordings and collected musical instruments. His music combines non-European and contemporary music that includes techniques derived from plunderphonics and musique concrète to create a personal musical language with which he tells stories inspired by his travels.

Biography[]

1974–1982[]

During this period, Roberto Musci traveled to the Middle East, Far East and Africa to study and record ethnic music. He attended traditional music courses: 1976 Cairo Conservatoire Egypt,1977 Gamelan musicin Yogyakarta (Indonesia),1980 Karnataka College of Percussion (India) and Madras Music Academy (India).[citation needed] During these trips he recorded music in the field and collected ethnic music on cassette tape.[citation needed] In 1976 he began broadcasting ethnic music, electronic music, and experimental music from Radio Popolare radio stations in Milan.[citation needed]

1982–1990[]

In 1982 with Italian journalist Claudio Ricordi,[1] Musci composed music for an installation in the city of Milan, presented at the XVI Triennale di Milano : " Cities, architecture, design, fashion, audiovisuals -- third cycle".[2]

Musci founded the record label "Raw Material"[3] from which he released two LP records :

On 1982-1983 "The Loa of music"[4] solo recording by Roberto Musci, where he combines ethnic music field recording with non-European musical instruments (strings, flutes, percussion) played live, and western electronic musical instruments (synthesizer) and acoustic guitar. Inside the LP cover there were traditional Vever Voodoo paintings.

1984 "Olympic signals"[4] by Italian pianist Giovanni Venosta[5] where he combines Minimal music & Electronic music with a touch of ethnic music. Whit : Chiara Stasi,[6] Sandro Cerino,[7] Franchino Gabualdi,[8] Ciaccio de Rossi.[9] 1985 He played with Walter Prati[10] for two multimedia shows : video soundtrack "Plessi video-going"[11] that introduced to the Rotonda della Besana in Milano the great anthological by Fabrizio Plessi.[12] (This was the first show of environmental multimedia in Italy).

"The Frog & the unicorn",[13] the soundtrack of a video project for IBM by Studio Azzurro,[13] at SMAU[14] in Milano.

With Walter Prati he broadcast for RAI an "Interactive Japanese music course" with examples of Japanese traditional music and sending by radio digital data,containing the history of Japanese Music, descriptions of musical instruments and musical examples, to be uploaded to computers.

1986 with Walter Prati, Saverio Angiolini[15] and Marco "Bill" Vecchi[16] he founded the music recording studio "Fx Studio"[17] in Milan.

With Giovanni Venosta he recorded the LP Water message on desert sand (Grammy Award-nominated in1987[18]) where they combined ethnic music, field recording with non-European musical instruments played live and western electronic musical instruments (synthesizer), acoustic guitar and electric guitar, for the London record label Recommended Records( U.K.). With: Marco "Bill" Vecchi, Valentino De Santi,[19] Tiziano Tononi,Andrea Petrus,[20] Sandro Cerino,Daniele Cavallanti,[21] Franchino Gabualdi,Walter Prati.

In 1987 with Giovanni Venosta he recorded Urban and Tribal Portraits, the second LP for the London label Recommended Records, with Paolino Dalla Porta,[22] Marco "Bill" Vecchi, Andrea Petrus, Sandro Cerino.

With Giovanni Venosta he recorded "War Song" a piece for RēR Quarterly Volume 2,number 3.[23] The ReR Quarterly[24] was an English "quarterly" sound magazine, comprising an LP record and a magazine by Recommended Records and November Books,[25] and edited by English percussionist,lyricist and music theorist, Chris Cutler.

1988 with Christina Kubisch, Riccardo Sinigaglia,[26] Pier Luigi Andreoni,[27] Francesco Paladino[28] and Raffaele Serra[29] he recorded two tracks ("Azur Noise" and "A Poetry of Broken Hearts" ) for Double LP Doubling & silence,[30] released by Auf Dem Nil / Recommended Records Italia.[31] The music was inspired by the works of surrealist painter Gustavo Foppiani [1925-1986].[32]

1990 with Giovanni Venosta he composed the music for "Ass," a Levi's jeans spot for TV.

With Giovanni Venosta he composed the song "The First Umbrella's Angle Variation" recorded on Cassette tape for Network 77, a South African Recording label MicroDot – Munem Muso.[33]

With Giovanni Venosta he composed some pieces for the soundtrack of "L'aria Serena Dell'ovest"[34] a movie by Italian film director Silvio Soldini.

Recommended Records (U.K.) made the digital remaster of "Water Messages on Desert Sands" and "Urban and Tribal Portraits" on CD as "Messages & Portraits"[35]

1991–2000[]

1991 With Giovanni Venosta he composed the music for "Urban and Tribal Dances" for the choreographer Louise Reichlin[15] for "Los Angeles Choreographer and Dancers".[36]

1992 with Giovanni Venosta he recorded on CD "A Noise, a Sound"[37] for Recommended records (U.K.) where they combined ethnic music with non-European musical instruments played live and western electronic musical instruments and instruments. With: Marco "Bill" Vecchi, Luciano Margorani,[38] Roberto Zanisi,[39] Saverio Angiolini,Sandro Cerino, David Moss, Momi D'Averi,[40] Ciaccio De Rossi, Olivia Bignardi.[41]

With Giovanni Venosta and Massimo Mariani[42] he composed the soundtrack for movie "Spoon River Anthology"[43] by Edgar Lee Masters directed by Italian director Alessandro Amaducci[44] and published on DVD by Kaplan Edizioni.[45]

From 1993 to 1996 he played with Walter Prati, Claudio Gabbiani,[46] Matteo Pennese[47] for the music and video event "Suoni ed immagini della memoria[48]" for International Holocaust Remembrance Day of the Shoah (27 January).

In 1995 with Giovanni Venosta he composed the music for "Principle of moments:the art of Yves Klein"[49] for the choreographer Dieter Heitkamp[50] for "Dance Company Tanzfabrik"[51] in Berlin, Germany.

With Giovanni Venosta he composed the music for "De Sade[52]" a commercial movie for Bulgari's Jewels, directed by Marco Poma[53] from the opera "Ornamenti" by Prospero Rasulo.[54]

With Claudio Gabbiani he composed and played live soundtrack for "Intolleranze"[55] by Italian film director Riccardo Rovescalli[56] for the festival "Il Giardino della Musica[48]" organised by MM&T[57] at Palazzina Liberty[58][circular reference] Milano.

1996 Island records (U. K.) published "Woman in late[59]" composed with Giovanni Venosta for "Quan go world voices," a compilation by Tom Schnabel with :Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Milton Nascimento, Mercedes Sosa and Salif Keita.

With Claudio Gabbiani and Roberto Zanisi he composed the soundtrack for the movie "Il giallo della palla verde nella stanza rossa[60]" by Italian film director Stefano Canzio[61] Special Award Milano Film Festival II.[62]

With Giovanni Venosta he composed the soundtrack for the movie " Pidgin[60]" by Italian film director Andrea Gropplero.[63]

In 1997 with Giovanni Venosta and Massimo Mariani recorded on CD "Losing the orthodox path" for Le disque Victò[64] (Canada) with the music for " Principle of moments : the art of Yves Klein " by the choreographer Dieter Heitkamp for " Dance company Tanzfabrik " in Berlin ,Germany. With: Sandro Cerino, Silvia Mandolini,[65] Moni Ovadia,[66] Roberto Zanisi,Ciaccio De Rossi, Cesare Picco, Liliana Bancolini,[39] Laura Pone, Amelie Berson,[67] Didier Aschour.[68]

Lowlands Records[69] (Belgium) printed "Debris of a Loa" a digitally re-mastering of the LP "The loa of music" (Raw Materials Records,1983) plus "Umi – the sea" he played and composed with Claudio Gabbiani (a project for computer-generated human voice inspired to Ukiyo-e , the " pictures of the floating world[15] " by Japanese painting Utamaru.

He played with Massimo Cavallaro for the recording of the CD "Giu' al Nord[70]", soundtrack of Italian comic actor Antonio Albanese[71]'s shows:"Giu' al nord " and "Uomo", for Auditorium Records,[72] in Italy .

He recorded the CD "Unintentional beauty[73]" for Lowlands records Belgium, with "Visna Mahedi Ensamble : Claudio Gabbiani,Giorgio Magnanensi,[74] Roberto Zanisi,Silvia Mandolini and Marco Ruggeri ". The CD is the recording of the live soundtrack of silent movie "The Golem: How He Came into the World" 1920,at "Time Zones music festival",[75] Bari, Italy .

With Claudio Gabbiani and Massimo Cavallaro he played live soundtrack of "The Phantom of the Opera[76]" directed by Rupert Julian 1925, for the festival "Senza Parole" organized by MM&T at Arena in the Brescia Castle, Italy and at "Caserta Estate festival 98'" at Reggia di Caserta.

In 1998 Musci composed with Giovanni Venosta the music for the " Nike" spot for TV.[77]

He played with Giovanni Venosta and Chris Cutler live soundtracks of the movie "Vampyr",by director Carl Theodor Dreyer, 1929 at festival "Senza Parole" organized by MM&T. The music was recorded by Recommended Records for cd "Vampyr and other stories[78]".

In 1999 with Giovanni Venosta Musci composed the soundtrack for the movie Rita incontra un amica[60] by Italian film director Monica Castiglioni.[79]

With Claudio Gabbiani, Jon Rose and Chris Cutler he played live soundtracks of the movies "De brug" 1928 by Joris Ivens,"Manhatta" 1921 by Charles Sheeler and Paul Strand,"Regen" 1929 by Joris Ivens and Mannus Franken, in festival "Lo spazio e la città" organised by MM&T at "Palazzina Liberty" Milan : music recorded by Recommended Records for cd "Steelwater light[80]".[81]

With Claudio Gabbiani, Massimo Cavallaro,[82] Piero Guerrera,[83][circular reference] he played live soundtrack for silent movie "Safety Last![76]" by Fred C. Newmeyer and Sam Taylor with Harold Lloyd,for the festival "Ombre sonore" organised by MM&T[57] at Garbagnate Milanese,Milano,Italy.

With Massimo Cavallaro he played soundtrack for live recited poems by Italian theatrical actress Piera degli Esposti.[70]

2001–2011[]

In 2001 Roberto Musci played with Keith Tippett and Claudio Gabbiani live concert at Palazzina Liberty[48] "Music for labyrinths : Waters".[87]

He composed with Giovanni Venosta music for 3D animation "GT"[88] by Miguel Soares.[89]

In 2002 he composed "Music for Labyrinths: Notre-Dame de Chartres" for voices and electronics,played at "Synthese 2002 – Imeb,[90] 32th Festival International des Musiques et Creations Electroniques, Bourges", France.

From 2002 to 2020 he composed music for Raw Material label "A tribute to Zugakousaku (Mamoru Kano)"[91] a Japanese Visual design and developer for Apple Inc. for Quartz Composer technology.

With Giovanni Venosta and Massimo Mariani he composed soundtrack for the movie "Non chiederci la parola[92]" by Italian film director Elisabetta Sgarbi[93][circular reference],presented at the 61st Locarno Film Festival, Switzerland.

He played with Claudio Gabbiani and Roberto Zorzi "Persistence of vision" , a live concert at Palazzina Liberty during "To Sting Festival[48]" organised by MM&T.

With Giovanni Venosta and Massimo Mariani he recorded for Recommended (U.K.) Art Bears Revisited and the Art Box,[100] --remixes, reworking & new ways of listening Art Bears With: Jon Rose, Otomo Yoshihide, Chris Cutler, The Residents, Fred Frith, Christian Marclay, and Bob Drake.

From 2003 to 2008, he made videos for the show "As time goes by[48]" a live Soundtracks from 40'-70' Hollywood movies with : Liliana Bancolini, Giovanni Venosta, Massimo Mariani, Tito Mangialajo.[101]

Since 2004 Roberto Musci has been developing the "Audio Painting"[102] technique: Audio Painting uses an algorithm of "Qurtz Composer," which receives video data (colors and movements) that are recorded via the camera together with sounds (frequency and timbre) that are recorded with a microphone, capturing delay, reverb, pitch and envelopes—sounds modify video images (colors, speed, delay or overlapping or multiplication effects). All of this creates a "Audiopainting" loop with music: It's like painting with music and creating music with images in real time.

In 2012 "Leaves", a recording label from Lithuania, published "Shadow Player" and "Claudia, Wilhelm R. And Me " on the compilation "Maps and diagrams : when the rain comes".[112]

In 2013 he remixed the recording of the live concert "Persistence of vison[113]" for digital issue by Raw Material.
