Room Camp (Japanese: へやキャン, Hepburn: Heyakyan), also known in Japan as Heya Camp, is a Japanese anime short-form series based on the manga of the same name and the spin-off to the first season of Laid-Back Camp. The story follows Nadeshiko Kagamihara, Chiaki Ohgaki, and Aoi Inuyama, three members of the Outdoor Activities Club, in their journey across Yamanashi Prefecture. The series is directed by Masato Jinbo from a series composition written by Mutsumi Ito.

Yumiri Hanamori, Sayuri Hara, Aki Toyosaki, Nao Tōyama, and Rie Takahashi reprise their roles from the anime television series Laid-Back Camp, with Akio Ōtsuka also returning to narrate the series. In October 2018, Room Camp was announced as part of the project that also included a second season of the main series and a film. Jinbo and Ito, who previously worked on Laid-Back Camp, were confirmed in April 2019 as part of the series' main staff.

Room Camp first aired in Japan on January 6, 2020, consisting of twelve episodes, and concluded on March 23.

While exploring the items stored in the Outdoors Activities Club room, Nadeshiko Kagamihara spots canned tuna. Assuming its purpose is to distract wild animals, she inadvertently opens a can when Chiaki Ohgaki and Aoi Inuyama arrive, with the former intending to use them to create oil lamps. As they discuss Nadeshiko's Yamanashi background, the trio agree to participate in a stamp rally—an effort to visit and collect stamps at the prefecture's landmarks—to win a year's worth of Minobu steamed buns.

While Nadeshiko is eating curry in Mount Fuji's form, Chiaki points out the changing shape resembles other Fuji-like mountains in Japan. The rain eventually subsides and the club attempts to observe the real mountain but is unable to due to clouds; instead, the three trace Mount Fuji's outline with their fingers.

Until she can recover her rally sheet, Nadeshiko improvises by stamping her notepad. After collecting another stamp, the club visits a foot bath where Aoi tells supposed legends about the water and location. Although her tales attract the attention of another bather, Nadeshiko and Chiaki quickly catch on to her lies. In an attempt to emulate her, Nadeshiko tries lying in a Kansai dialect, only for Aoi to tell yet another falsehood about the dialect being popular for legends. At the Shima household, Rin's grandfather drops off the stamp rally sheet.

At a grocery store, Chiaki spots a caricature of Mount Fuji and points out the outline is based on its perspective from the Yamanashi prefecture; as a result, she proclaims it to be a "victory" for that region. The club later goes to buy tuna bowls for lunch, where Aoi notes Yamanashi is the second-largest consumer of tuna in Japan, with Shizuoka Prefecture at the top. Nadeshiko is asked to pick between the two prefectures but compares herself to Mount Fuji as she is connected to both.

Chiaki decides to film the club during their adventures, but during a test of courage, they encounter a cult surrounding a fireplace; as it turns out, the video was a proposed horror mockumentary. The club completes their stamp rally by visiting the Misato Noyu hot spring. While relaxing, Chiaki reveals the rally was organized in advance by her and Aoi, though Nadeshiko was already aware. Nevertheless, she comments she enjoyed the journey before asking for the year's worth of steamed buns. As they leave the hot spring, Nadeshiko suggests they go camping again.

The next morning, Nadeshiko proclaims she had formed her stamp rally for the club to participate, beginning with the clubroom.

Cast and characters[]

  • Yumiri Hanamori as Nadeshiko Kagamihara:
A student at Motosu High School who joins the Outdoor Activities Club after getting inspired from Rin's camping.[4] Hanamori described her character in the series as a "beginner" in Yamanashi.[5]
  • Sayuri Hara as Chiaki Ohgaki:
One of the original members of the Outdoor Activities Club.[4] Hara hinted that her acting style "naturally changed" in the series as opposed to Laid-Back Camp to follow the flow of her character, whom she described as someone "who says gagging things".[5]
  • Aki Toyosaki as Aoi Inuyama:
One of the original members of the Outdoor Activities Club.[4] Toyosaki stated the series would not just include her character's "funny stories" but also a few scenes that "will make [the viewers] cry".[5]

One of Nadeshiko's friends who inspires her to try camping.[4]

Production[]

Development[]

In July 2018, Shōichi Hotta approached animation producer Ryoji Maru with a project that included the second season of Laid-Back Camp, a short anime, and a film.[6] The short anime, titled Room Camp, was confirmed in October 2018.[7] In April 2019, C-Station and DeNA would respectively animate and produce the series, with Masato Jinbo, Mutsumi Ito, and Mutsumi Sasaki serving as director, series composition writer, and character animation designer and chief animation director, respectively, while Yoshiaki Kyōgoku, director of the first season, would supervise the series.[8] The premiere of the series was announced to be in January 2020,[8] later revealed January 6.[9] The series consists of twelve 3-minute long episodes.[10][3]

Writing[]

Room Camp was written around the concept of "stamp rally" as it takes place during winter.[11] Despite the title, the characters are mostly seen outside the Outdoor Activities Club room.[5] Similar to the main series, the staff did location scouting where the characters visited in the spin-off.[11] Ito made sure that viewers would be satisfied watching the series like what would they feel in finishing an episode of Kuishinbo! Mansai, a Japanese weekly cooking mini-program.[12]

Casting[]

Yumiri Hanamori, Sayuri Hara, Aki Toyosaki, Nao Tōyama, and Rie Takahashi returned to voice their characters Nadeshiko Kagamihara, Chiaki Ohgaki, Aoi Inuyama, Rin Shima, and Ena Saitō, respectively, from the first season of Laid-Back Camp, while Akio Ōtsuka reprised his role from the main series as the narrator.[4]

Music[]

Akiyuki Tateyama, the composer for the first season of Laid-Back Camp, returned to compose the spin-off.[4] Asaka performed the series' ending theme music titled "The Sunshower", which was composed by Eri Sasaki.[9][11] Asaka felt that the song gave an "after-school" feeling and described it as a "kind of song that goes well with sunsets".[13]

Marketing[]

A 30-second teaser trailer for Room Camp was released in August 2019.[14] In December 2019, a poster for the series was announced to be given to five winners from answering a questionnaire about hearing the voices of fans who have been supporting Laid-Back Camp.[15]

Release[]

Broadcast[]

Room Camp began airing in Japan on AT-X, Tokyo MX, and BS11 on January 6, 2020, and on YBS on January 12.[16]

Home media[]

Crunchyroll began simulcasting Room Camp on January 6, 2020.[17] FuRyu released the series' Blu-ray and DVD on May 27, 2020.[18]

Other media[]

The special episode of Room Camp, titled "Sauna, Food, and a Three-Wheeler" (サウナとごはんと三輪バイク, Sauna to Gohan to Sanrin Bike), was bundled with the Blu-ray and DVD release of the series.[19] It follows Rin on her camping with a replacement three-wheeled motorcycle while her scooter is undergoing a yearly maintenance.[20] The episode was directed by Kyōgoku from a script written by Jin Tanaka, who served as the series composition writer of Laid-Back Camp.[19] A preview trailer was released in March 2020,[21] and the episode was streamed on YouTube for one day on April 29, 2020.[22]
