Rubi Rose Benton is an American rapper, songwriter and model.

Early life[]

Rose was born Rubi Rose Benton and raised in Lexington, Kentucky to an Eritrean immigrant mother and Black American and Japanese father.[1] Her mother was born in Ethiopia although being an Eritrean. Her paternal grandmother is of Black American descent and her paternal grandfather is of Japanese descent. Her father is a lawyer named John Benton and her mother is a dentist named Nardos Gebreluel. She has an older sister named Scarlette and a younger sister.[2][better source needed] She lived for one year in Geneva, Switzerland. She moved to Snellville, Georgia in her junior year of high school.[3][4] She studied politics at Georgia State University.[5]

Career[]

Rose first gained fame as the main model for hip-hop group Migos' music video for the single "Bad and Boujee". Around this time, she started regularly featuring on a Twitch stream with Jamaican-born East Coast Hip Hop Commentator DJ Akademiks.[6][better source needed] Rose started releasing her own music and made traction in 2019 with her single "Big Mouth".[7] Rose made a cameo appearance in American rapper Cardi B's music video for her single "WAP", which was released on August 7, 2020.[8] In 2019, she signed by Chris Turner (A&R) to LA Reid's music label Hitco Entertainment.[9]

On December 25, 2020, Rose released her first official mixtape, For the Streets, featuring guest appearances from Future and PartyNextDoor.[10] Rose was featured in the 2021 XXL Freshman List.[11]
