Russell John Calvert (1 February 1909 – 20 August 2011) was a New Zealand local-body politician. He served as Mayor of Dunedin between 1965 and 1968.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Calvert was born in Masterton[1] in 1909. He was educated at Nelson College in 1923 and in Wellington.[1][2] He moved to Dunedin and established a dental technician's laboratory there.

Political career[]

In Dunedin hee became involved in local-body politics in the 1940s and was first elected to the Dunedin City Council in 1958 and stood unsuccessfully for mayor in 1962. He was then elected for one term as mayor from 1965 to 1968.[1] He was defeated in 1968, but re-elected to the council mid-term in a by-election before standing for mayor unsuccessfully one last time in 1971.

Later life and death[]

Following his retirement, Calvert resided in Arrowtown, Christchurch and then Nelson.[1] He died in 2011 aged 102.[3]
