SPEECH is a Russian architectural office. It was founded in 2006 by architects Sergei Tchoban and Sergey Kuznetsov. The bureau specializes in designing buildings and complexes with various functional purposes, developing urban concepts, as well as designing interiors. Projects by SPEECH have been implemented in numerous cities in Russia (Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Sochi, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, and others) as well as abroad (Berlin, Milan, Venice, Minsk).

History of Formation[]

SPEECH architectural office was formed in 2006 as a joint project of the architects Sergei Tchoban and Sergey Kuznetsov through the merger of two companies – Tchoban and Partners and S. P. Project. Initially the bureau was called SPEECH Tchoban / Kuznetsov, but after Sergey Kuznetsov was appointed Chief Architect of Moscow in 2012 and left the company, Sergei Tchoban became the sole architect and managing partner, and the name of the bureau was shortened to SPEECH.

  • 2014 – The main media center of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
  • 2014 – Lotus multifunctional complex, Moscow.
  • 2014 – Expoforum, St. Petersburg (together with Evgeniy Gerasimov and Partners).
  • 2015 – Nevskaya Ratusha administrative and business center, St. Petersburg (together with Evgeniy Gerasimov and Partners).
  • 2015 – FC Krasnodar Stadium, Krasnodar (together with Gerkan, Marg and Partners).

Urban planning projects[]

SPEECH architectural office has extensive experience in the development of architectural and urban planning concepts and design projects. In particular, the company worked on the following:

  • 2007-2009 - Master plan and development of Sretenka neighborhood, Moscow
  • 2008 - Urban planning concept of the Rublevo-Arkhangelskoe residential area in Moscow
  • 2008 - Master plan concept of the artificial Federation Island in Sochi
  • 2010-2012 - Master plan for the development of area D-1 at the Skolkovo Innovation Center
  • 2011 - Master plan of the “V lesu” microcity, Moscow region

Exhibition and educational activities[]

Projects by SPEECH have been featured at prestigious exhibition venues, including the Shchusev State Museum of Architecture in Moscow, Arch Moscow exhibition, the International Investment Forum in Sochi, Aedes Gallery in Berlin, MIPIM international exhibition of investment projects in Cannes, and the Venice Architecture Biennale.

The co-founders of the SPEECH bureau, architects Sergei Tchoban and Sergey Kuznetsov, twice were curators of the Russian pavilion at the Venice Biennale of Architecture. In 2010, they (together with Pavel Khoroshilov and Grigory Revzin) presented the project Russia Factory; the concept was developed and implemented by SPEECH in the small town of Vyshny Volochyok. In 2012, the activities of the Skolkovo foundation were presented at the pavilion’s exhibition (together with Grigory Revzin and Valeria Kashirina). The project i-city / i-land for the first time in Russian history received an award at the Venice Biennale of Architecture – a special mention of the jury, and also received awards from Iconic Awards in 2013 and Interior Design's Best of Year Awards 2013.

For four consecutive years starting with 2012, SPEECH has participated in the INTERNI exhibition in Milan. It has presented there the installations: The Eye of the Architect (2012), Golden River (2013), U_cloud (2014),[8] and Living Line (2015).[9]

In 2013, SPEECH presented the exhibition Architect of the Year at the ARCH Moscow International Exhibition.

In 2008, Sergei Tchoban and Sergey Kuznetsov started the architectural magazine speech:. The magazine explores the topics that are most relevant for contemporary Russian architecture, and it is distributed in Russia and abroad. The online edition archspeech.com was launched in 2014.

Professional awards[]

Buildings and complexes built according to designs by SPEECH bureau have won numerous national and international professional awards.

  • In 2011, the office building on Leninsky Prospekt (Moscow) won in the category Building of the Year. People's Choice.
  • In 2012, the VTB Group office in the Federation complex (Moscow) won the Grand Prix prize in the Best Office Awards 2012.
  • In 2012, the office building on Leninsky Prospekt (Moscow) received 5 stars status in the category Best Office Building in the International Property Awards 2012. Granatniy 6 residential complex received the status of Highly Commended in the category Apartment Buildings in the same competition.
  • In 2013, WINE HOUSE residential complex was the winner of the annual Urban Awards in the category Best Luxury Class Residential Complex Under Construction in Moscow, and was recognized as the best facility in the Luxury Housing category of the RREF Awards
  • In 2013, the building of the Museum for Architectural Drawing (Berlin, Germany) was awarded the prize Highly Commended Architectural Review Future Projects Awards 2013 (as the project), Iconic Interior Design’s Best of Year Awards 2013 and AR Emerging Architecture Awards (as the building) and received the status of Highly Commended in the World Architecture Festival in Singapore.
  • In 2014, the building of the Museum for Architectural Drawing (Berlin, Germany) was awarded the prizes: The International Architecture Award 2014 and DAM Award for Architecture in Germany, and also received a special prize of the jury, the AIT Award in 2014, and Architizer A + Awards 2014.
  • In 2015, the building of the Museum for Architectural Drawing (Berlin, Germany) was awarded the 3d prize of The German Annual award,[10] Heinze Architekten AWARD 2015[11] and received the status of Winner of the category Architecture and Urban Space of German Design Award.[12]
  • In 2015, the Lotus multifunctional complex (Moscow, Russia) was awarded in the category The Best Implemented Office Buildings and Business Center Construction Project in the competition The Best Implemented Project in the Field of Construction.
  • In 2015, the Lotus multifunctional complex (Moscow, Russia) was recognized as the best in the category Office Property in the national phase of the FIABCI World Prix d'Excellence Awards 2015.
  • In 2015, the “V lesu” microcity residential complex was recognized as the best in the category Residential (High Rise) in the national phase of the FIABCI World Prix d'Excellence Awards 2015.
