The saddleback gunnel (Pholis ornata) is a medium gunnel found along the western coast of North America.

Description[]

The saddleback gunnel is an elongated eel like fish with a pronounced brown and tan pattern. Max size is around 30 cm.[2]

Range and habitat[]

The saddleback gunnel ranges from Vancouver Island in the north to Santa Barbara County, California in the south. It is found at depths of 0–50 m along the coast and in estuaries.[2] They are rarely seen by divers because they spend most of the day in structure and are flighty, even at night.[3]

Life history[]

Both males and females guard the egg mass after spawning.[2]
