Saint Kotar is a point & click adventure game developed by Red Martyr Entertainment and published by Soedesco.[1] It was released for Microsoft Windows on October 28, 2021.

Gameplay[]

The game takes place in the rural town of Sveti Kotar in Croatia, where two characters, Benedek Dohnany and Nikolay Kalyakin, uncover a series of murders that are connected to witchcraft. The player controls both characters, talks to NPCs, and uses items to advance in the story. At certain points in the story, the player can influence the outcome of conversations and certain plot points by choosing different dialog options. Furthermore, the player can discover more than 70 locations and unlock subplots to learn more about the lore.

Story[]

Two godly men, Benedek and his brother-in-law Nikolay, wake up in a house in Sveti Kotar after having nightmares. Together they attempt to find Benedek's sister Viktoria, who has mysteriously disappeared. On their way, they get to know the local people and learn about strange incidents in the valley. In order to find clues to the whereabouts of Viktoria, they have to investigate a series of murders and disappearances in the small catholic community. Depending on the player's actions and the dialog options, they can reach multiple endings.

Development[]

Development took five years,[2] during which it was funded through a Kickstarter campaign, raising 50,178 euros in total.[3] The company previously published a free prologue, called The Yellow Mask, described by the Escapist writer Amy Davidson as a "strong foundation for an extremely creepy mystery".[4] Voice actors included, among others, Happy Anderson.[2] The game was written in English and was translated into 14 different languages.

Reception[]

RageQuitGR gave a rating of 70% saying, "With much more emphasis on plot and dialogue than on puzzles, Saint Kotar is a worthwhile experience for fans of horror stories."[5]

Hey Poor Player gave a rating of 2.5 out of 5 points and said, "Saint Kotar tells a compelling story that should satisfy horror fans, and there are moments that are genuinely unsettling. Unfortunately, that’s not enough to save Saint Kotar from its shortcomings. The makings of a really great game are present, but it gets in its own way too much. Frustratingly, Saint Kotar’s biggest offender and what holds it back is its own clumsiness, in its execution, characters, performances, and telegraphed final twist."[6]

Adventure Gamers gave it a mixed review criticizing its presentation and puzzles, but praising its atmospheric and detailed world, characters, story progression and optional content.[7]
