Sam Denby is an American YouTube personality and podcaster, best known for creating the YouTube channels Wendover Productions, Half as Interesting, and Extremities.

Career[]

Wendover Productions[]

Denby created the YouTube channel Wendover Productions on February 11, 2010. He uploaded his first video about the psychology of advertising on August 31, 2015.[‡ 1] Denby has since uploaded hundreds of other videos. as of November 2021, he has over 3.13 million subscribers and over 450 million channel views. [1] [‡ 2] His videos are most commonly about logistics, most notably those of aviation, as well as geography and economics.[2] His video on Tourism in Iceland received significant attention.[3]

On December 31, 2019, following the subject of Saint Helena on the Extremities podcast, Wendover Productions released on YouTube the documentary The World's Most Useful Airport, which documents the origins of the airport of St. Helena, the troubles with being certified for operational use, etc. alongside a segment that talks about the airport's medevac value with a testament from the mother of a patient.[‡ 3]

Half as Interesting[]

On August 31, 2017, Denby announced the creation of a second channel called Half as Interesting.[‡ 4] The channel was launched to be a continuation of a series called "That Wikipedia List" or TWL, which had covered topics Denby chose from Wikipedia:Unusual articles, but the new channel would not be limited to that list.[‡ 4] Videos are released 3 times every 2 weeks, every Thursday and every other Tuesday at 10:30 am Eastern Time,[‡ 5] and cover various assorted topics.[‡ 6]

As of August 2021, the channel has over 1.95 million subscribers and over 368 million channel views.[4] [‡ 6] Half As Interesting has a Nebula Exclusive called The Brick Facade.[‡ 7] Its name is derived from Denby's tendency to start videos about secret topics with facts about bricks.

Extremities podcast and YouTube channel[]

In June 2019, Denby created a podcast called Extremities about the logistics of living in the world's most isolated populated locations.[5][‡ 8] The first season was about Pitcairn Island, consisting of six episodes. Season 2 started on September 25, 2019, and is about Svalbard. Season 3 started on November 27, 2019, and was about Saint Helena.[‡ 9]

Following this podcast, it was announced that Extremities would evolve into a relaunch as Sam's third YouTube channel, starting out with a video about the Little Bay Islands and a video about Socotra, followed by a third video about the Kerguelen Islands one week after and then following a schedule of releasing a video every third Wednesday.[6]

Other works[]

In March 2018, he was invited to film with scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson on his show StarTalk, where Denby, Tyson and Chuck Nice talked about the possibilities of interstellar travel.[‡ 10] This coincided with the launch of his third channel, Sam from Wendover.[‡ 11]

He was one of the original founders of the Standard creator community along with Dave Wiskus, CGP Grey, Philipp Dettmer, and many other creators. Through Standard, he has released most of his content to Standard's Nebula streaming service, mostly the same videos he posts on YouTube but ad and sponsorship free, but he also releases some Nebula Originals only on the platform including The Final Years of Majuro.[7]

Personal life[]

While Denby was born in Washington, D.C.,[citation needed] he explained during the launch of his third channel that he has lived in Edinburgh, Scotland, for at least two years.[‡ 11] However, on his Instagram account, he stated he has lived in Colorado as of 2020.[‡ 12] In Wendover Bonus content posted on Nebula, Denby went to the closest Tesla Supercharger, which was located in Glenwood Springs, CO. As of April 2018, he was studying international business.[‡ 13]
