Samantha Winders

Samantha (Sam) Winders (born 1995) is a netball player from New Zealand, who has played more than 40 times for the Silver Ferns, the New Zealand national netball team.

Early life[]

Samantha Sinclair Winders was born in June 1995. Her parents were Jamie Sinclair and Justine Sinclair. She has a brother and two sisters, and grew up in Rotorua on the North Island of New Zealand. She was educated at John Paul College, Rotorua, where she was deputy head girl. She married Josef Winders, who is a competitive BMX rider who has represented New Zealand.[1][2]

Netball career[]

Winders was recruited by the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic netball team in her first year after leaving school in 2014. In 2015, she was named in the Silver Ferns Development Squad and, in 2016, was selected for the Fast5 netball national team to compete in the Fast5 Netball World Series. She was selected for the Silver Ferns full squad for the first time in 2017, making her full senior debut in that year. She remained with the Magic and played her 100th game for the club at the end of May 2021. She was recruited by the Magic for a ninth successive season, to compete in 2022. Winders has been active in encouraging girls in sports to look after their bodies, given a tendency of netball players between 15 and 19 to experience injuries, and is an ambassador for the NetballSmart programme. Away from the netball court, she has taken a course on how to write stories for children, with the idea of writing stories about children who play sports.[3][4][5][6]
