Warnakulasuriya Sandani Malsha Fernando (born 7 September 1998; සඳනි ප්රනාන්දු) [Sinhala]), popularly as Sandani Fernando, is an actress in Sri Lankan cinema and television.[1] Started her career as a model, Sandani later became one of the popular television actresses particularly with the role 'Rashmi' in the popular television serial Haara Kotiya.[2] and 'Madhavee' in the serial Agni Piyapath.[3]
Personal life[]
She was born on 7 September 1998 in Marawila, Sri Lanka as the only child of the family.[4] Her mother Johan Hemali worked as a batik designer for few years.
Sandani completed her education at Negombo South International School and completed A/Ls through commerce stream.[5][6][7]
Career[]
In 2016, she started modeling career after becoming the runner-up in the ITN Avurudu Kumari competition.[8] Then she appeared in several television commercials such as Munchee Kome, Etisalat, Elephant House, Commercial Bank and HNB Bank.[9] In 2017, while doing commercials, she was invited to the play the supportive role 'Rashmi' in the television serial Haara Kotiya.[10] The show became very popular and was nominated for Sumathi Awards and Raigam Tele'es in many award categories.[11] She received a very good audience response for Rashmi's character and later became her turning point in the career.[12] In the same year, she participated to the Rupavahini Avurudu Kumari competition and became the runner-up.[13] She studied two courses on acting in the years 2016-2017 under Saddha Mangala Sooriyabandara and Prasanna Withana.
About a month after the Haara Kotiya teledrama started, she went to study acting at 'Impas Acting and Performing Arts'. In 2018, she made her first music video appearance with the song Priyawee sung by Sirasa Superstar season 6 winner Piyath Rajapakse.[7][14] After the success of the serial, she was selected to play a recurring role in the second season of the serial titled Kotipathiyo in 2018.[12] In the same year, she acted in the serial Thuththiri, the first Sci-Fi Comedy Mega tele-drama in Sri Lanka.[15][16] She played the supportive role of an alien called "Tia" in the serial. At the same time, she participated for the reality competition, 'Hiru Mega Stars'.[17]
In 2017, she appeared in the music videos for the song "Yali Hamuwemu" sung by Nirosha Virajini and song "Saavi" by Iraj Weeraratne. In 2018, she made her maiden cinematic appearance with the film 1970 Love Story directed by Aruna Jayawardena.[18] However, the film is yet to release. In 2019, she acted in two television serials: Crime Scene and Hiru Awidin.[19] Then in 2020, she joined the cast of Agni Piyapath directed by Jayaprakash Sivagurunadan and written by Saddha Mangala Sooriyabandara.[20] In the serial, Sandani played the lead role of 'Madhavee',[21] wife of Manuranga, opposite to Saranga Disasekara and Shalani Tharaka.[22][23] The serial later received popularity and critics acclaim. In 2019 she performed in Pandama by Dhanith Sri. The video later won the award for the Best Music video at Sumathi Awards[24]
Apart from acting, she is also a television presenter currently hosting the musical program Handa Radi Peya telecast in Swarnavahini.[25]
