Sangjwa (상좌; "High Commander") is a Korean military rank used by the armed forces of North Korea. The insignia for a sangjwa is a shoulder board containing two vertical stripes and three vertical white stars. This is influenced by the former colonel insignia of the Soviet Union.
North Korea also maintains a senior colonel rank known as Taejwa (대좌; "Grand Commander"). The insignia for taejwa is a shoulder board containing two vertical stripes and four stars (two vertical white stars over two horizontal white stars).
