Sangkar is a 2019 Malaysian action drama film. It depicts the rivalry and redemption between two local mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters, as they go from enemies to friends while fighting for glory and family. The film is the first Malaysian MMA film, it stars , Remy Ishak, . This was the reunion project of Ariffin and Ishak in nine years since Evolusi KL Drift 2 (2010).

It was released on 29 August 2019 in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.[1][2][3][4]

Synopsis[]

Adam is an MMA fighter who got raised by his stepfather Hassan after his mother Hajar died due to cancer of illness, while his father was in prison for 10 years. Adam was supposed to be fight with James McSweeney, but unfortunately, he doesn’t fight with Adam because his arm was broke due to accident. He was replaced by Johan, another MMA fighter. Azalea, (Johan’s sister) who works as the nurse, forcing Reza (Johan’s little brother) to go home.

During the tournament, Adam pokes Johan’s eye while fighting. Adam wins for the tournament as playing dirty tactics. Farid, who is the bookie debt collector, not satisfied at Adam winning. Adam tells Farid that he will pay him. The rain comes, Johan was supposed to be home after praying, but there is a massive fight along with police and Adam and Johan was involved. Soon after, Johan was seriously injured by Adam, while Jai and his friends are arrested by police. However, Adam feels guilty that Johan was sented to the hospital. He rushes to the hospital to see him, but was attacked by Bob (a friend of Johan) and Lea tells Bob to calm him down. She tells Adam to not to see Johan and force him to leave. After that, Adam was working a construction worker. After causing an incident, Hassan furiously with Adam that he is going to cut his salary and humiliating his mother, but he tries to beat Hassan and tell him not to say his mother. Adam quits his job.

Adam was followed by Reza goes to mosque and prays for God. At the same time, Adam’s house was trashed. He sees a cheque inside outro his mother's picture and see a note say, ‘pay or die’. Adam wants Lea to keep the money but she refuses. Adam goes to sees Johan and keep that money, but he calls the nurse and tells them to get Adam leave. Later on, Adam was forced to throw away the alcohol and learns about repenting with his late mother.

The next morning, Adam comes back to Johan again. Johan tells him about he was giving the money to his family. Later on, Johan finally comes home but he was still injured. Meanwhile, Adam was chased by Farid’s henchmen. He fights with them but was knocked out and forces him fall off the roof. Farid also not satisfied about Adam runs away from them. Adam gives RM1000 to Farid and RM1000 to him. He also wants to fight in the underground with prizes RM2000.

Adam was called by Reza that Johan was fall by his bed. Adam tries to carry Johan, but tells him not to. He forces Reza to carry him instead, but Adam doesn't care Johan about his injuries and carry him. Lea comes home fastly and angry at Reza about Adam came here for help. Johan tells Lea about Adam is likely going to be help him. The next morning, Adam, Lee and Hafiz steals wheelchair and bed at the retirement house. At the same time, Adam, Lee and Hafiz send wheelchair and bed to Johan’s house. Johan doesn’t like thank Adam as gifts. Adam takes cares Johan such as eating rice, drink water, and give him the adult diapers.

Later than evening, Adam was involved fight in the underground. After he loses the fight, Hafiz gives the money to Adam. Adam, Johan, Lea, Bob and Reza went to the water park. Adam starts feels love with Lea but she has not yet to be married yet. Adam takes another fight with an opponent. Adam wins the fight, but McSweeney tells him that he will join him the fight and not be a coward.

Lea heals Adam after a fighting and she tells him she doen't like the person who joins the fight with MMA fighter. Adam and Johan enjoying the view at the park. After Johan realizes about the night fighting incident, he forgives Adam. Meanwhile, Jai was released from prison and he explains to Lea about the night fight incident. Lea knows that Johan and Adam was fighting at the night. Adam explains to Lea that he is the one who injured Johan. Outraged, Lea angrily slaps Adam, forcing Adam to leave. Johan tells Lea to give Adam a chance, but she refuses. Adam didn't forgive himself about his life is about to be. Lea feels like deeply embarrassed.

After that, Adam was called by Hafiz that Mcsweeney is going to fighting with Adam. He rushes to the hospital to see Johan. But Adam is likely not yet to be training to fight Mcsweeney. Before Johan trains Adam to fighting with Mcsweeney, Lee and Hafiz brings Johan to the training fight while Bob is exercising in front of nurses. Johan is no longer become the MMA fighter and becomes Johan's trainer.

At the final tournament, Adam finally fights with Mcsweeney, along with ex-MMA fighter Johan, Lea, Reza, Bob and Farid are watching Adam fighting. As Mcsweeney defeat Adam, Adam sees his late mother and tells him to try again. At the final round, Adam finally defeats Mcsweeney. Adam wins the champion along with trophy while Johan was healed with his finger move which is Reza shocked.

In the mid credits scene, Adam finally meets his father at prison, while Hafiz and Lee return wheelchair and bed back to the retirement home as a gift.

Production[]

The film cost around RM 2.8 million. Filming took place in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya and Banting, Selangor from 7 May to 11 June 2018. MMA fighter Saiful Reza choreographs the scenes as well as training the actors. The film also features appearances by established MMA fighter such as local fighters Saiful Merican, Peter Davis, Jihin Radzuan, Rashid Salleh, Andy Teh; and international fighters James McSweeney "Sledgehammer" and Davron Kuronboev.
