The Sant Jordi Awards (Catalan: Premis Sant Jordi de Cinematografia) are film prizes awarded annually in Barcelona by the Catalan branch of the Spanish radio network Radio Nacional de España.[1] They were established in 1957 to encourage Catalan cinema at a time when Catalan language films were banned by the Spanish government under Francisco Franco. They were subsequently extended to all Spanish films.[citation needed]

Awards are made in the following categories:[2]

  • Millor òpera prima (Best first work)
  • Millor pel·lícula espanyola (Best Spanish film)
  • Millor actriu de pel·lícula espanyola (Best actress in a Spanish film)
  • Millor actor de pel·lícula espanyola (Best actor in a Spanish film)
  • Millor pel·lícula estrangera (Best foreign film)
  • Millor actriu de pel·lícula estrangera (Best actress in a foreign film)
  • Millor actor de pel·lícula estrangera (Best actor in a foreign film)
  • Premi especial del jurat (Special jury prize)
  • Premi de la indústria cinematogràfica (Film industry prize)
  • Premi Sant Jordi de la crítica de RNE (Spanish National Radio critics' prize)
