Miniaturist Sarah Carter Frothingham (1821, Boston –– 1861, New York) was an American miniature painter. She is known for her watercolor portraits.

Life[]

Sarah was born in 1821 in Boston, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of the American portrait painter, James Frothingham (1786–1864).[1] Majorities of her artworks have been done in Brooklyn and Manhattan between 1837 and 1845. Most of her paintings were done in watercolor and oil paint. Her portraits have been exhibited in several art expositions and art academies throughout New York and Washington, D.C., including the Boston Athenæum, the National Academy of Design and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. In 1841, the National Academy of Design named Sarah Frothingham as an associate.[2][3][4]

Sarah Frothingham died on July 20, 1861, in New York.[5]
