Sarah Smith is an English film director, producer, and writer. She is the co-founder of Locksmith Animation. Smith directed the animated feature films Arthur Christmas (2011) and Ron's Gone Wrong (2021).

Profile[]

Smith began her career through her involvement in radio comedy, and later writing and producing television shows for the BBC, such as The League of Gentlemen (1999) and The Armando Iannucci Shows (2001).[1]

Smith joined the animation studio Aardman under a "development role", having had contact with the studio in prior years with an interest in joining the studio to work on film scripts. Smith initially felt uncertain about the suitability of the role, having come from a live action comedy background, but ultimately became engaged with it, believing she joined the studio at an important time, saying "[there was] an opportunity to take a whole fresh path and look at what they wanted to do as a company." Smith became involved in the production of the film The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists! (2012) and collaborated with director Peter Lord, where she secured rights to adapt it from the books it was based on.[2] Smith continued her collaboration with Lord where she would direct her first feature film, Arthur Christmas, which starred James McAvoy and was released in 2011.[1][3][4]

Smith co-founded the animation studio Locksmith in 2014 with Aardman executive Julie Lockhart, and with the financial backing of Elisabeth Murdoch.[5][6] She directed the studio's first film, Ron's Gone Wrong, which was released in 2021.[7] Smith left Locksmith in June 2021.[8]
