School gun raffle

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A school gun raffle is a fund-raising technique used by schools in the United States. In a typical arrangement, the booster club sells tickets to a series of drawings, for example ten guns in ten days, or fifty-two guns, one each week for a year. Winners must stipulate their eligibility to own a gun and take delivery from a participating gun shop.

A writer for a magazine for gun enthusiasts praised the concept.[1]

The practice, while widespread[citation needed], has been criticized. A proposed raffle at Comeaux High School was cancelled after complaints from parents.[2] Lucama Elementary School implemented a rule that students could not buy tickets.[3] Escambia Academy is one school that has continued to have the raffle.[4]
