Bakari Ward, professionally known as Scorey or Scorey Ayee, is an American rapper from Syracuse, New York. He was the first artist signed to Columbia Records Only Dreamers Achieve Records in 2020, a startup record label created by Chicago rapper Polo G.[1] Scorey describes Polo G as a mentor to him[2] and he has been described as a protégé of Polo G.[3]
Early life and Career[]
Scorey grew up listening to rappers such as Lil Wayne, G Herbo and 50 Cent. He mimicked their style and freestyled with his friends. He began recording music in 2018 and taking it seriously in 2019.[2][4]
During his childhood he enjoyed playing basketball and played on a basketball team either from a club or school. In school he met many of his friends including a girl named Leah. Scorey had met Leah in grade 7, they had the same class and they immediately clicked . They both played basketball and would wait for practice together. Leah passed away in the summer before 10th grade. Scorey's mom had gotten a call from the school with the bad news and after school she told him the news, he was only 14 at the time of Leah's passing. In school they offered counseling services after her death. Scorey said he regrets not going to the counselor for help. Leah was his best friend and he says that she was the type of person to always remind him to organize his binder, not sleep in class. He said she was like a mom in a way. Scorey has mentioned Leah multiple times in songs and even has a song dedicated to her called Leah's Song.[5]
Scorey has lost many friends over the course of his life. Most recently his friend Zachary “Zuly” Holloway who is featured in many of his early music videos and Storm. Scorey has dedicated the song “Guardian Angel” to Zuly showing videos of him and videos of a filmed music video. The song Victim by Scorey is filmed at a gathering for Zachary’s passing.
Scorey once had a near death experience after taking fake pills that contained fentanyl. Scorey was rushed to the hospital after he blacked out, his step dad and mom told him that if he had been any later getting to the hospital he could've lost his life.
Scorey's debut single "Freddie Krueger", released on September 1, 2019, caught the attention of rapper Polo G who saw it posted on a friends Instagram story who was signed to the same label as Scorey. From there Polo G contacted him on Instagram. Days later, Polo G invited him to perform with him at Webster Hall in New York City, as part of his Die a Legend tour, along with rappers such as Yungeen Ace, Luh Kel, and Toosii. It was at this point that he also quit his summer job at Green Lakes State Park, which helped pay for his studio sessions and videomaking.[4]
During the recording session for Scorey's single "Moods", Polo G asked him to join his startup record label Only Dreamers Achieve, a partnership with Columbia Records. He accepted and became the first artist signed to the label.[1][6] His single "Dior You" was the first release under the record label, released on March 12, 2021.[6] He later featured in Polo G's third studio album Hall of Fame released in June 2021.[7]
