Scum's Wish (Japanese: クズの本懐, Hepburn: Kuzu no Honkai) is a Japanese manga series by Mengo Yokoyari. It was serialized in Square Enix's seinen manga magazine Big Gangan from September 2012 to March 2017, and has been collected in eight tankōbon volumes. Both an anime television series adaptation by Lerche and live-action television series aired between January and March 2017 on Fuji TV.

Plot[]

High school student Hanabi Yasuraoka has been in love with Narumi Kanai, her older childhood friend who is now her homeroom teacher. But from the look in Narumi's eyes when he sees the new music teacher Akane Minagawa, Hanabi realizes that he is in love with Akane and not her. Hanabi meets Mugi Awaya, another student who is in love with Akane, who was his tutor when he was in middle school. Hanabi and Mugi make a pact and begin a fake relationship to satisfy each other's loneliness from their respective unrequited loves, both sexually and emotionally. They agree to not fall in love with each other and end the relationship if their love is returned from the people they are in love with.

A high school student who is in love with Narumi. After finding out that Narumi is in love with Akane, Hanabi begins a fake relationship with Mugi to satisfy their mutual loneliness. She later enters into a physical relationship with her best friend Sanae, but the relationship ends after Sanae decides to give up on Hanabi. Hanabi then decides to quit her fake relationship with Mugi and goes on a different path to find her true love. In Decor, Hanabi hasn't moved on from her feelings of Mugi—despite being with lots of friends during their time apart—she still loves him. While working as a staff member at a concert venue, she sees Mugi again and the two of them accept each other's love and hold hands, possibly starting the genuine relationship the both of them had hoped for.

A high school student who is in love with Akane. He and Hanabi begin a fake relationship to satisfy each other's desires. In middle school, Mugi had already been in a secret relationship with his senior, Mei Hayakawa, who took his virginity since he was not able to confess his love to Akane. Mugi had always been aware of what kind of person Akane is, but loved her nevertheless. Later in the series, Mugi confesses to Akane and they go on a date. However, after the date, Mugi realizes that he cannot hold on to his ideal image of Akane he had and bids farewell to Akane with the hopes that he can finally move on from her. Later on, he's shown to have moved on after coming to a conclusion to end everything with Hanabi in order to pursue a better life and find true love. In Decor, Mugi still hasn't gotten over Hanabi despite having a multitude of sexual encounters with different women over the course of their time apart. Eventually, while daydreaming about Hanabi, he declines an invitation to have sex from a woman who approached him at his job, where he comes to the conclusion that Hanabi is the girl he wants. When he finally sees Hanabi again at a concert, he asks God to please let his relationship with her last this time and the two of them hold hands, possibly signifying that the two of them will start the relationship they had wanted.
Narumi Kanai (鐘井 鳴海, Kanai Narumi)

Hanabi's older childhood friend and neighbor who becomes her homeroom teacher in high school. His mother died when he was young, so he usually went to Hanabi's home for homemade meals. He is attracted to women with long hair, as they remind him of his mother. Even after knowing Akane's true nature, Narumi does not seem to mind and asks her to marry him, which she accepts.
Akane Minagawa (皆川 茜, Minagawa Akane)

A new music teacher who arrives at the school during Hanabi's freshman year. On the outside, she is a nice, well-behaved woman who is adored by her students, but she actually loves the feeling of winning a man's heart while directly hurting someone else who is in love with that man. She can also be considered a lonely person and a nymphomaniac. She attempts to seduce Narumi like her previous relationships, but she notices that Narumi refrains from touching her, unlike the men in her past, later realizing that he loves her. After Narumi asks her to marry him despite knowing her true nature, Akane begins to take interest in him.
Sanae Ebato (絵鳩 早苗, Ebato Sanae)

Hanabi's friend and classmate. Sanae has been in love with Hanabi since she saved Sanae from a train molester. When Sanae has a sleepover at Hanabi's house, she impulsively kisses her and confesses her love in the process. The two then begin a physical relationship. Atsuya then questions Sanae on whether she is actually in love with Hanabi or just sexually attracted to her. After consideration, Sanae then gives up on Hanabi and attempts to end their friendship, although Hanabi refuses and says she wants to keep their friendship and will give Sanae space and time until she is ready to be friends again. Sanae later tells Atsuya that while she loves Hanabi, she is giving up on her and will start to trust him more. Later on, it is shown that Hanabi and Sanae reunite and get back to being mutual friends. Although the end of the original manga subtly hints that she may return the feelings of Atsuya someday, in Decor she has fully realized her homosexuality and begins a relationship with her university teacher Yuka.
Noriko Kamomebata (鴎端 のり子, Kamomebata Noriko)

Mugi's childhood friend who has been in love with him ever since someone told her that she and Mugi looked like a "prince" and "princess". She has been pursuing Mugi and trying to act and look like a princess because of the comment. She hates her own name and prefers to be called "Moka," abbreviated from "most kawaii." When she confesses her feelings to Mugi, Mugi takes advantage of her to pursue a physical relationship without returning her feelings. However, Mugi later realizes that Moka is special to him and he does not want to ruin her for his selfish needs; thus, their relationship ends.

Sanae's cousin who has romantic feelings for her. He questions Sanae about her relationship with Hanabi, asking her if she is really in love with Hanabi or is only sexually attracted to her. After Sanae decides to give up on Hanabi, she tells Atsuya that she will trust him more. In Decor, he again confesses his love for her after graduation and promises to be her support even if she rejects him, which makes Sanae depressed, since she highly appreciates his support, but can not reciprocate because of her lesbian orientation.
Mei Hayakawa (早川 芽衣, Hayakawa Mei)

Mugi's senior at middle school. Mugi turned to her after being unable to initially confess to Akane and they had sex. Afterwards, Mei apologizes to Mugi for rushing him into having sex.

Scum's Wish, written and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari began in Square Enix's Big Gangan magazine on September 25, 2012,[7] and finished on March 25, 2017.[8][9][10] That same day Square Enix simultaneously released the eighth and final tankōbon in a regular and a limited first edition.[11][12]

The series is published digitally in English by Crunchyroll Manga and in print by Yen Press.[13][14]

A spin-off manga titled Kuzu no Honkai décor ran in Big Gangan from November 25, 2017 to May 25, 2018.[15][16] It was collected into one volume.

Volume 7.5, a fan book titled Ambivalent, covering the manga and the anime, was released by Square Enix on December 24, 2016.[33]

Anime[]

An anime television series adaptation was announced in March 2016 to air on Fuji TV's Noitamina block beginning on January 12 and concluded on March 30, 2017.[3][11] It was streamed exclusively by Amazon Prime Video in Japan and worldwide.[34] The series is directed by Masaomi Andō and is animated at the studio Lerche with series composition by Makoto Uezu, character designs by Keiko Kurosawa and music by Masaru Yokoyama.[35] The series ran for 12 episodes released across six Blu-ray/DVD volumes.[36] The opening song is titled "Uso no Hibana" (嘘の火花, "Spark of A Lie") and is sung by 96neko (who later voiced Anne Faulkner in Paradox Live). The ending theme titled "Parallel Line" (平行線, "Heikousen") is sung by Sayuri.[37][38][39] The anime has been licensed by Sentai Filmworks for digital and home video release.[40] Madman Entertainment released the series on home video in Australia and New Zealand.[41] MVM Entertainment acquired the series for home video in the United Kingdom and Ireland.[42]

High schoolers Hanabi Yasuraoka and Mugi Awaya are a pair of young lovers who share a tragic secret. Despite their intimate relationship, they are each other's replacements for their true loves, under feelings that are left in silence. So how did this relationship come to be? Three months ago in April, Hanabi's first love lands a teaching job at her school, her childhood friend Narumi Kanai. Her jealousy is soon sparked after witnessing Narumi and the school music teacher, Akane Minagawa, becoming closer to each other, and later crosses paths with Mugi after Hanabi bumps into Akane in the hallway, dropping her papers. Mugi reveals his crush on Akane to Hanabi, who was also his home tutor for a time. Bonding ever closer over their sadness, on a rainy day in June, Mugi and Hanabi turn to almost having sex with each other until Hanabi's ringing phone interrupts them. Being reliant on each other for love, they soon swear on a pact that they both made. Their relationship will go on, but if one of them finds love with their desired person, they must break up with each other.

Hanabi is approached by her best friend Sanae "Ecchan" Ebato, asking if they could walk home together. However, Hanabi opts to walk with Mugi instead, and they are intercepted on the way by Noriko "Moca" Kamomebata, Mugi's annoying and clingy childhood friend who seems to have feelings for him. Viewing herself in the shoes of a princess and Mugi as her envisioned Prince Charming to sweep her off her feet, she completely detests Hanabi and her relationship to Mugi, and is swiftly scolded by Hanabi for her irritating behavior. As she's helping Narumi with some papers, Hanabi hears Akane's piano playing in the room next door, which endears Narumi and enrages Hanabi, who takes out her frustration with Mugi at a karaoke bar. Ecchan, bothered by Moca's conversation and her conclusion that Hanabi is being used, is soon invited by Hanabi to a slumber party to her house, on the assumption that she has a certain special someone on her mind. However, the time of the slumber party comes and Hanabi comes to realize that the special someone is actually her—Ecchan forces herself on Hanabi and starts kissing her, as she was unaware of her true feelings.

An episode told in the perspectives of Akane, Narumi, Hanabi and Sanae respectively. Akane and her friend Terauchi make love, and as they do it, she recalls herself years ago as a high schooler, making flirtatious moves on her friend's crush, which breaks her heart. She reveals herself as a manipulative and lustful girl, who finds enjoyment in emotionally destroying the person whose smitten on the guy that confesses his feelings towards her. Akane tells Hanabi to go to the music hall after class, where Narumi is waiting for her on the same room. Narumi, who has feelings for Akane due to her long hair resembling in his late mother's hair, confesses while Hanabi overhears at the door. Akane seemingly accomplishes destroying Hanabi's feelings despite her having no real interest in Narumi. Meanwhile, a heartbroken Hanabi contemplates her mistakes in not confessing her feelings towards Narumi, regretting every moment she had when they were together years ago. Unwilling to break the news of Akane's true nature to Mugi, Sanae confronts Hanabi on her way back, intent on comforting her. Passionately kissing her, Sanae takes Hanabi to her house, where she begins to make sexual advances on her. Despite Hanabi's reluctance, Sanae uses her emotional state and integrity of their friendship as a means to force herself onto her body even more. Returning home, Hanabi sees her younger self scorning her over manipulating Sanae for love, a behavior no different from Akane's. When Hanabi confronts Akane the next day regarding Mugi and Narumi's feelings for her, Akane reveals her sadistic nature, as well as her own twisted sense of pleasure and desire to her.

Hana recalls her younger self afraid of being alone since her father left. Seemingly lost, she sat on a swing and thought why she never cried rather her mother gushed her tears towards her. Narumi found Hana and he became Hana's motivation and inspiration to move on despite the pain and hardship. Mugi recalls his younger self where he is having a sexual relationship with Mei, a senior schoolmate. After their sexual intercourse, they talked about Akane. Being curious, they found her having an old man going to a motel. Akane became Mugi's tutor and the latter noticed her clothes, which she still wore the last time with the old man. Shifting to present timeline, Hana wakes up near Sanae and left. Mugi, while thinking Hana and realizing Akane's real identity, called Mei to vent out his sexual craving. Mugi expects Mei to stay longer but she left afterwards, leaving Mugi speechless. Hana and Mugi meet on the rooftop and express their pain and loneliness until they passionately make out. They ended up in Mugi's room where Hana decides to have sex with Mugi but the latter is about to start, Hana bails out. Meanwhile, Narumi invites Akane to a date which she doesn't like. Akane gets drunk and eventually trips, but is caught by Narumi. Akane takes the opportunity to kiss Narumi. They end up in a motel and Akane continues her advances towards Narumi. The next morning, as Hana walks on the hallway, she bumps along Akane. Akane bluntly tells to Hana that she had sex with Narumi last night.
6"Welcome to the X-Dimension"

Hanabi, feeling troubled after being told by Akane that she had sex with Narumi, decides to get back at her by going after her admirers. In her mind, she has an argument with a younger version of herself, feeling conflicted whether what she is about to do is right. In the end, she succumbs to the desire of beating Akane, despite the fact that she is doing it for herself. After school, Hanabi decides that she and Mugi should start dating for real. Realizing that she can't continue using her friend for her own desires, Hanabi meets with Sanae to tell her that she is dating Mugi, but Sanae tells Hanabi that she doesn't care about her relationship with Mugi, and states that she will never let Hanabi go. The next day, Sanae continues to aggressively pursue Hanabi by touching her legs. Instead of stopping her, Hanabi feels guilty for taking advantage of her and deserves the punishment. While resting in the infirmary with a fever, Sanae tells Hanabi that she will accept her regardless of her flaws and the best way to attract people is by hiding one's true feelings. Later, Hanabi bumps into the man she saw with Akane and decides to start seeing him. While on a date with him, she realizes that while being one of Akane's admirers, he's only recruiting her to be a part of his own group of admirers, and starts to seduce him into falling for her. At the same time, Hanabi feels that she is empty and doesn't know what it feels like to kiss someone you really love. When comparing herself to Akane, Hanabi realizes that her level self-respect and self-worth around men is much lower than Akane's, and the fact that simple rejections that can shatter a person's whole world is what makes love. At school, Sanae leads Mugi into thinking that Hanabi is seeing other men to which Mugi later confirms after having a normal kiss with Hanabi. After, he runs into Moca and asks her out on a date.
7"LOTS OF LOVE"

While Moca and Mugi are out on their date, Hanabi meets up with Takuya (Akane's former student). When Takuya asks Hanabi to go to a hotel with him, the thought embarrasses her and she rejects him. When he gets a call from another girl, Takuya casually tells Hanabi he only went out with her out of lust. Meanwhile, Mugi and Moca see a movie when Moca realizes that if her love for Mugi stays unrequited, she would rather have that than never getting a happy ending. After her efforts to make Takuya fall in love with her end in vain, he leaves Hanabi. Hanabi admits to herself that her stubborn pride of wanting to be desired got the best of her where she couldn't tell the difference between love and lust. Feeling empty, she tries to call Mugi, but he ignores her. Before the end of their date, Moca states that her unrequited love for Mugi is enough for her to keep moving. When Mugi tries to get her attention, she confesses her love to him and they kiss. Back at Mugi's apartment, Moca recalls that throughout her life, she had always got her way by crying and acting cute around others. In her mind, she rejects the embodiment of her innocence saying she wants to be touched. As Mugi starts to make out and intimately touch Moca, he stops and tells her he can't continue because she is someone special to him. Moca confesses that she knew how he felt all along that while being special to him, she would never be someone he could touch. Realizing that her love for Mugi that has kept her going will never go beyond his perception of her being "special", she decides to end it. The next day, Mugi and Hanabi meet and decide to confess to their respective love interests and get rejected before the end of summer in order to officially date.
8"Sweet Refrain"Toshiyuki MarukawaMarch 2, 2017 (2017-03-02)
Sanae meets up with her cousin Atsuya who is in love with her. Despite knowing that Sanae has a crush, he tells her that her feelings for Hanabi won't bother him, while at the same time, questioning the nature of her love, attributing it to the fact that Hanabi is a girl. Meanwhile, both Mugi and Hanabi come to the realization that they are starting to not see themselves as each other's replacements. Later that night, Mugi contacts Akane to meet up while Hanabi does the same for Narumi. The next day, Mugi sees Akane and confesses his feelings to her. As he openly continues to deny his feelings to her, his lustful desires overcome him, regardless of his earlier decision to be with Hanabi. Later that evening, Hanabi meets with Narumi and manages to confess her love to him. As she cries, knowing he will never return her feelings, Narumi embraces and thanks her. Afterwards, Hanabi waits for Mugi, convinced that she will be able to move on and is not alone because she has Mugi at her side, unaware that he is having sex with Akane, and is convinced that he'll be the one to break her from her lustful ways.

Hanabi wakes up responding to Sanae's messages and looking on Mugi's message since he didn't come as they agreed upon, thinking that his affair went well to Akane and being manipulated by Akane also. Sanae invites Hanabi to a vacation which she quickly agrees. Upon arriving to an ancestral villa, they're greeted by Atsuya, which dismays Sanae. After their meal and Hanabi heads to bath, Atsuya pushes his affection to Sanae which ended up in awkward situation. In the middle of the night, Sanae decides to sleep with Hanabi and continues her passionate affection. The next day, Atsuya invites Hanabi to a nearby lake. Atsuya expresses his love to Sanae and let Hanabi decide for her own affections towards Sanae. After their conversation, Hanabi resolves that she should let Sanae go, ending her lustful cravings. Later that night, Hanabi decides to end their passionate relationship with Sanae which the latter also does the same. However, filled with pain, Sanae berates and scolds Hanabi. Hanabi wants to pursue their friendship even if they're no longer showing their affections. They separately went home and started school for the next season. Meanwhile, Akane and Mugi continues their sexual relationship. Akane visits Mugi as part of her "official" visit as a teacher but knowingly Mugi's parents are away, she continues to have sex with Mugi.
10"Fragile and Empty"

While Mugi and Akane finish having sex, Akane ponders her first sexual encounter and the psychology behind it, like her self-importance and self-worth. At 7:00 a.m., Akane's phone alarm wakes her up and she self-deprecates out-loud. After kissing Mugi, he asks her out for a date the following week, but she declines, stating that she is going out with Narumi, all-the-while making psychological notes about how naïve Mugi is. The next day, Mugi enters the music room alone and begs Akane to not go out with Narumi. She declines again, but gets forced onto the table by him. A few days later, Narumi and Akane go on their date to an aquarium; while looking at penguins, Akane ponders once again about how Narumi is lackluster in his sex drive, but slowly realizes how strange her and his relationship is. At the end of school, Hanabi picks up her phone she lost in a classroom, and places her hand on Narumi's lectern. Returning back to Akane, Takuya runs into her and Narumi walking home, calling her a slut for having a new man in the circle of her relationships. Acknowledging this, Narumi hugs & comforts Akane after she tried to cut him off. Asking Akane out again, Mugi expresses his young-age and inexperience, but is willing to pursue her.
