Sealdah railway division

Sealdah railway division is one of the four railway divisions under Eastern Railway zone of Indian Railways. This railway division was formed on 1854 and its headquarter is located at Sealdah in the state of West Bengal of India.

Asansol railway division, Howrah railway division and Malda railway division are the other railway divisions under ER Zone headquartered at Kolkata.[1][2]

Indian Railways proposed to use ferro concrete sleepers in large yards. Ferro concrete sleepers only trial was made in 1949 in the Langhola Ghat section of the Sealdah Division in Indian railways. ere there are very many difficulties. For instance, they are heavy and each weighs about 6 mds. The handling difficulty, the difficulty about fastenings, packing are all there unsolved. They have to be experimented on a large scale before any definite opinion is given about them. [3]


As of April, 2021, Sealdah Terminal handles 124 Mail/Exp, 34 Passenger & 921 EMU Trains.

Kolkata Terminal handles 72 Mail/Exp, 04 Passenger & 31 EMU Trains (04 Spl EMU service due to closure of Tala Bridge) and it also linked with Circular Railway EMU service, Maitree Express & Bandhan Express running between India & Bangladesh.

Total route Kilometer of division is 715.34 Kilometer (Electrified 690.075) with 101 Block stations, 52 Flag stations, 53 Halt Stations and 06 Block cabins.

Suburban Service[]

Sealdah division caters to both long distance and Suburban services, for which it is divided into two sections :

Main/North division and South division.

A. The main division is again divided into two parts:

•Dum Dum Jn. – Dankuni

•Naihati – Ranaghat – Gede

  • Krishnanagar – Lalgola Bangaon – Barasat – Hasnabad

B. The south division comprises the following sections:

• Sealdah - Ballygunge - Sonarpur - Canning (operational since- 1863)

• Sonarpur - Baruipur - Diamond Harbour (operational since- 1883)

• Ballygunge - Budge Budge (operational since- 1890)

• Baruipur - Lakshmikantapur (operational since- 1928)

• Lakshmikantapur - Namkhana (fully operational since- 2004)

North and South divisions are linked via Kankurgachi – Park Circus chord.

Besides, Sealdah, trains originate from/terminate at 32 other stations in this Division.
