Sekisui Chemical is a Plastics manufacturer with head offices in Osaka and Tokyo. The company owns a plethora of subsidiaries engaged in a variety of businesses. Sekisui has over 27,000 employees in more than eighteen countries worldwide.[1]

History[]

Sekisui Chemical was founded on March 3, 1947.[2] The company created by seven young scientists with the intention to run a general Plastics business.[3]

In 1963, Sekisui Chemical established Sekisui Plastics Corporation (SPC) in Pennsylvania, U.S., to manufacture expandable polystyrene paper. This was the first expansion into the U.S. for a Japanese manufacturing company.[4]

In October 2020, a 45-year old researcher was accused of engaging in corporate espionage against Sekisui on behalf of Guangdong-based Chaozhou Three-Circle (Group).[5]

Sekisui has been recognized for its environmental efforts and in 2020 was ranked as the 12th most sustainable corporation in the world by the Canadian organization Corporate Knights Inc.[6]

The first of these towns opened in 2020 in Tokyo.[8]

Corporate Philosophy[]

The name "Sekisui" comes from Sun Tzu's book The Art of War.[12] “The victor of a battle is determined in one fell swoop with tremendous force, just as pent-up water [Sekisui] drops into a deep gorge". The company takes this to mean that they must do their business by "analyzing your opponent’s situation, to consolidate your own structure, and release the power of pent-up waters to be successful".[13]

In November, 1959, Sekisui Chemical adopted the '3S Principle' as its corporate philosophy.[14] It stands for "Service, Speed and Superiority".
