The Seychelles Coast Guard (SCG) is a branch of the Seychelles People's Defence Force created in 1993.[1] It is a maritime, military, multi-mission service. They recently acquired responsibility for search and rescue for vessel incidents as well as environmental protection from the Port and Marine Services Division.

Although the Seychelles are a small country, it is located off the Horn of Africa, strategically close to the operation of notorious pirates.[2][3][4][5][6] India, China and the United Arab Emirates have made strategic donations of patrol vessels to the Seychelles. India[7][8] gifted two SDB Mk 5 patrol vessels (Constant the 46 m (150 ft 11 in) long by 7.5 m (24 ft 7 in) wide 319-ton vessel after Topaz 48 m (157 ft 6 in), 320-ton vessel capable of 56–60 km/h (35–37 mph) speeds). The Chinese donated the 38 m (124 ft 8 in) Etoile patrol boat, built especially for the Seychelles. The UAE also donated the La Fleche and patrol boats. Through the Seychelles Coast Guard's employment of her small fleet, Seychelles has been able to arrest, try, and convict many pirates. In 2013 the UAE paper The National reported that Seychelles was imprisoning more than 100 convicted pirates at the time.

As of 2016, the Coast Guard has several operational vessels. The largest and most capable vessels were all donated.

In May 2011, the SCG helped to protect the privacy of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during their honeymoon on the North Island. At the end of their stay, the couple invited several members of the Coast Guard ashore to personally thank them for their efforts.[9]

In February 2019, Sri Lanka donated brand new two Wave Rider-class inshore patrol craft produced by the Sri Lanka Navy. The 14 m (45 ft 11 in) long boats can reach a speed of 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph).[10][11]
