Shaun R. Harper (born October 26, 1975) is an expert on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in businesses, firms, agencies, and educational institutions. He is a Provost Professor in the Rossier School of Education and the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. He also is the Clifford and Betty Allen Chair in Urban Leadership, founder and executive director of the USC Race and Equity Center, and editor-at-large of TIME magazine. Professor Harper served as the 2020-21 American Educational Research Association president, and the 2016-17 Association for the Study of Higher Education president. He was elected to the National Academy of Education in 2021. Dr. Harper spent a decade at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a tenured professor.

Early life and education[]

VaShaun Ramon Harper was born to a 16-year-old single mother in Thomasville, Georgia. He is a 1994 graduate of Thomasville High School and a 1998 graduate of Albany State, a public historically black university in Georgia. As an undergraduate student at ASU, he was president of the student government association, Polemarch (president) of the Delta Xi chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, editor-in-chief of The Student Voice (the official student newspaper), a member of three collegiate honor societies, and a drummer in the ASU Marching Rams Show Band. He earned a master's degree in 2000 and a Ph.D. in 2003, both from Indiana University.

Career and research[]

Professor Harper has published 12 books, and is author of more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and other academic publications. His research has been cited in more than 15,000 studies across a vast array of academic fields and disciplines. He is recipient of one honorary doctorate and dozens of top honors in his field. On a list published annually in Education week, Shaun has been repeatedly ranked among the 10 most influential professors in the U.S.

Dr. Harper often advises CEOs and leaders on DEI strategy. He has spoken at and facilitated high-quality professional learning experiences for employees across all levels at more than 400 corporations, firms, agencies, and educational institutions. He has deep expertise on a vast array of DEI topics. Executives frequently seek his guidance in moments of racial crisis in their organizations.

A prolific and energizing speaker on a range of diversity, equity, and inclusion topics, Shaun has delivered hundreds of keynote addresses around the world, many to audiences of thousands. More than 40,000 professionals across a multitude of industries have been in his home for live virtual speeches and presentations throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Professor Harper has testified twice to the United States House of Representatives and spoken at numerous White House convenings. He served on President Barack Obama's My Brother's Keeper Advisory Council; on the national education policy committee for the Biden-Harris Campaign; and on California Governor Gavin Newsom's Equity, Higher Education, and COVID-19 Recovery Taskforce.
