After entering the army Stuart attended several allied defence colleges including the United Kingdom's Joint Services Command and Staff College (2003) and the United States Army War College (2015). He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of New England and masters' degrees in Project Management, Defence Studies (King's College London), and Strategy.[1]

Stuart served as a junior officer in the 2nd/4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment until it was disbanded and then the 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment when it was re-established. In 2008 he assumed command of the 8th/9th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment.[1]

In 2017 Stewart was appointed Force Commander of the Multinational Force and Observers. He returned to Australia in 2019 and, in January 2020, assumed the role of Head Land Capability.[1]

Stuart was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2011 Queen's Birthday Honours,[2] and awarded the Distinguished Service Cross as part of the 2014 Queen's Birthday Honours for his leadership in Afghanistan.[3] In 2018 he received the 18 May 1811 Medal from Uruguay for his services.[4] As part of the 2020 Queen's Birthday Honours he was advanced to an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO).[5]
