Single Homeless Project (SHP) is a registered charity working to prevent homelessness and help vulnerable and socially excluded people in London to transform their lives.

The charity provides a range of accommodation and community support services across all 32 London boroughs.

The charity' provides accommodation services, including hostels, supporting housing and winter shelters, to over 1,800 people each year. These provide stable and secure housing, offering young people and adults intensive support to tackle the underlying causes of homelessness including trauma, mental ill-health, drug and alcohol addiction, family breakdown or offending.

The charity also runs community-based services which help people who are at risk of homelessness to maintain their accommodation and prevent them from losing their home. This includes people with a range of tenures including council, housing association and private rented tenants as well as those in bed and breakfasts and other temporary accommodation. Staff provide support with mental and physical health problems, debt, rent arrears or domestic violence, resolving crisis situations that often may lead to homelessness.

The charity employs over 300 staff members and supports over 8,000 Londoners a year.

History[]

SHP was founded in 1975 by Stuart Clark, a homeless man who had slept rough and had a history of residing in London winter shelters. He managed to persuade a housing association to let him use a short life property in Pimlico to house himself and five other homeless men, including Dennis Handfield, after whom SHP’s high level support hostel in Camden was later named.[1]

This Pimlico property was the foundation for what became Single Homeless Project. Thanks to an Urban Aid grant, SHP was able to establish itself in 1977, becoming a registered charity[2] and Stuart became the charity's first paid employee.[3]
