Sirkka Tellervo Salonen (1917 — 1975) was a Finnish model and actress, who in 1938, became the third Finnish woman to win the title of Miss Europe. She also won the title of Miss Finland that same year.

Life[]

Salonen was born on September 29, 1917, in Peräseinäjoki, Finland. She was the daughter of Toivo Salonen and Johanna Gabrielsdotter. Before starting her career as a model, she was studying at the Teachers Training College at Heinola to become an elementary school teacher.[1][2][3] In 1938, She won the title of Miss Finland,[4] that qualified her for the Miss Europe 1938, which was the 11th edition of the Miss Europe pageant. That year's contest was held in Copenhagen, Denmark on September 10, 1938. Sirkka Salonen was voted as Miss Europe 1938 from among 14 finalists of different European countries, in a unanimous decision by the juries led by the Belgian born French journalist  [fr].[5][6][7] After becoming Miss Europe in 1938, Salonen started to receive invitations to participate in other beauty pageants, and also in films.[8] Upon her winning the competition, she was expelled by her college's committee, for taking part in a beauty competition, as they did not consider a beauty pageant winner suitable for a future teacher.[9][10][3] However, the board of committee later overturned their decision, but Salonen no longer continued her studies in Heinola.[11] Salonen was married to Paavo Lahtinen and later divorced, with whom she'd have two daughters.

Sirkka Salonen died on October 11, 1975.
