Snail Mail is the American indie rock solo project of guitarist and singer-songwriter Lindsey Jordan.[1] The band started playing songs live in 2015 and released the EP Habit in 2016.[2][3] Snail Mail's debut studio album, Lush, was released on June 8, 2018, via Matador Records and was nominated for Breakthrough Artist/Release and Best Rock Album at the 2019 Libera Awards.

History[]

Lindsey Jordan released her self-recorded solo EP Sticki in 2015 and played several live shows with her new band as Snail Mail.[4] She was joined by Ryan Vieira playing bass and Shawn Durham on the drums.[5] After completing one short DIY tour in 2016, the band released the EP Habit on Sister Polygon Records, which gained traction after being featured on several major US music sites, and signed with Ground Control Touring.[5] Pitchfork added the EP's opening track, "Thinning", to their Best New Track series.[6]

Snail Mail, now with bassist Alex Bass and drummer Ray Brown, toured North America extensively in 2017 supporting Priests, Girlpool, Waxahatchee and Beach Fossils.[7] Jordan signed with Matador Records in September 2017 and played her first headlining tour with Snail Mail in the beginning of 2018.[7] Snail Mail's debut full-length album Lush was released on June 8, 2018, to generally positive reviews from music critics.[8][9] In 2019, the band toured New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and the US, playing with artists such as Mac Demarco and Thundercat.[10][11] In June 2019, Snail Mail released a new version of their song "Pristine" in Simlish for the new EA game The Sims 4: Island Living.[12] That same month, Matador Records reissued Habit, digitally featuring a cover of the band Courtney Love and their song "The 2nd Most Beautiful Girl in the World".[13]

Critical reception[]

Snail Mail has been well received by critics. Their sound has been described as reminiscent of the '90s sound, "refiguring music from the decade they were born".[14] The band’s influences include Avril Lavigne,[15] My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Elliott Smith, Liz Phair, Cat Power, The Cranberries, Pavement, The Velvet Underground, Paramore, and Fiona Apple.[16][17] Pitchfork described Snail Mail's lyrics as "emotionally wise, musically clear, and encompasses the once and future sound of indie rock".[16] Rolling Stone magazine gave Snail Mail's debut album Lush three and a half stars and described the potential of Lindsey Jordan and her music as "the work of an indie-rock prodigy".[14]
