Spartacus Educational
Spartacus Educational is a free online encyclopedia with essays and other educational material on a wide variety of historical subjects (including British history and the history of the United States as well as other subjects including World War I, World War II, Russian Revolution, slavery, women's suffrage, Nazi Germany, Spanish Civil War and Cold War). It is used by history teachers and students.
Based in the United Kingdom, Spartacus Educational was established as a book publisher in 1984 by former history teacher John Simkin and Judith Harris.[1] It became an online publisher in September 1997.[2]
According to the Southern Poverty Law Center "the site simply reproduces a host of conspiracy theories that first appeared elsewhere" and "many of the books repeatedly cited in footnotes are other conspiracist tracts offering their own speculations".[3] Arthur Goldwag, author of Cults, Conspiracies, and Secret Societies and The New Hate: A History of Fear and Loathing on the Populist Right, described it as "very shoddy, not well-sourced".[3]
