Namukwaya Hajara Diana, (born 23 October, 1992) better known by her professional name Spice Diana, a.k.a. Spice Mummy is a Ugandan R&B artist. She first found mainstream success in 2014 with the hit single "Onsanula" and remained a fixture of the East African music scene with subsequent efforts like 2018's "Now" and 2020's "Kononya." [5]

Initially drawn to rap and hip-hop, Diana made the lateral move to R&B while still in her teens. The church choir and after school programs had sharpened her vocal skills, and her interest in art and fashion helped her make connections in the entertainment industry.[5]

Her 2014 debut single "Onsanula" earned her the Best Female Breakthrough Artist at the 2015 HiPipo Music Awards, and paved the way for future success like "Title (feat. Orisha Sound)" and "Omusheshe (feat. Ray G)," and the aforementioned "Kononya," which saw her team up with Tanzanian superstar Harmonize. ~ James Christopher Monger.[6] She has had several singles including "Anti Kale", "Bukete" and "Bimpe". Spice Diana has also collaborated with both local and international artists that include Pallaso, Ray G, Aganaga and Jamaican Orisha Sound among others.[7]

Early life and education[]

Spice Diana was educated at Kibuli Demonstration School for primary education and St Peter's Senior Secondary School for her secondary education.[8] She graduated from Makerere University with a Bachelor of Industrial Arts.[9] Spice Diana is struggling to balance between music and school. This is because most of her lecture times collide with her musical performances.[10] Spice Diana was interviewed.[10]

Music career[]

Spice Diana started her music career in 2014 with her hit single Onsanula that later won her an award in 2015.[11]Prior to the year 2014, she was being managed by Dr. Fizol of Avenue Records.[7] Spice Diana has signed record labels with Twinkle Star and Humble Management before she went solo.[10]Spice Diana has many hits including "Anti Kale", "I miss you" and "Buteke".[12][13] In 2016, Spice Diana decided to organize awards to recognize her team. She named these awards the Team Spice Diana Awards. Only Spice Diana and upcoming artists performed at the award show.[14]

Awards and nominations[]

She won Best Female Breakthrough Artist at the 3rd HiPipo Music Awards in 2015.[16] The prestigious award is based on a popularity vote from the public via Web, SMS, WhatsApp and social media voting.[17]

She won the Female Artist of the year 2021 at the Zzina Awards, the biggest online awards ceremony in Uganda as of 2021.The awards are organized by Galaxy FM in partnership with Buzz Events in Uganda's[18][19]

She also won the Most Stylish Female Artiste of the Year at the Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards 2019 that honored stars in the fashion industry in Africa. It was held on 13 December 2019 at the Kampala Serena Hotel in Kampala. and organiesed by Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards (ASFAs) and sponsored by Ciroc.[20][21]

Police Brutality Incident[]

In 2017, Spice Diana was invited to perform at the Kampala City Festival where she was beaten up by the Uganda Police after performing one song.[22][23] The song that Spice Diana performed is called Onsanula and it has a verse which talks about the police being against the people. The lyrics may have been the cause of her beating as she stated on her Social Media Accounts.[24]

Uganda Police however alleged that the singer conjointly with her then manger, Rogers Lubega had rather violated the venue security protocol and additionally assaulted a police officer on duty, according to the then Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Emillian Kayima.[25]

Spice was instantly arrested andt taken to Nkruma road Police Post from where she was later released on police bond.[25]

Police later revealed its intention to charge the Singer and her manager for allegedly assaulting the officer but they were never charged.[26]
