St Mary's Hospital is a hospital located on the outskirts of Newport on the Isle of Wight. It is run by the Isle of Wight NHS Trust.

History[]

The hospital, which was designed for low energy consumption,[2][3] was designed by Ahrends, Burton and Koralek and opened in 1990.[4] An archaeological investigation was carried out on the site in 2009 but found no features or artifacts of archaeological interest.[5]

St Mary's is also the site of a sculpture named Land Sea Light Koan, often shortened to 'the Koan'.[6] The sculpture, which was created by Liliane Lijn and commissioned by the Isle of Wight Health Authority, was installed in 1997.[7]

A new Medical Assessment Unit with 24 beds and space for 6 ambulant patients opened in August 2015.[8]

Facilities[]

The hospital has 18 units and wards and 246 beds.[9][10] The hospital also contains a private wing, which holds 11 beds.[11] Other facilities include a restaurant, a small shop and a Costa Coffee outlet.[12][13]

Planning permission for a helipad was granted by the Isle of Wight Council in April 2012 and construction started in October 2012. The helipad became operational on 17 May 2013.[14]

Services[]

Services provided at the hospital include urology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, ear nose and throat (ENT), cardiology, gastroenterology, rehabilitation, respiratory, dermatology, care of the elderly, rheumatology, gynaecology, maternity and paediatrics.[15] There is also a dialysis unit run by Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, which serves as a satellite centre for the Wessex Kidney Centre based at the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.[16][17]

Transport[]

The hospital is served by Southern Vectis route 1, which runs from Newport to Cowes. The journey from the hospital to Newport bus station in the centre of Newport takes approximately 5 minutes by bus.[18][19]
