St. Matthew's Academy is a Roman Catholic secondary school in the Scottish town of Saltcoats, North Ayrshire. The Headteacher is Mr Stephen Colligan. He is supported by 4 Depute Head Teachers. Mr McGuigan is Head of S1 and S5 . Mrs Schlesiger is Head of S3 and S6. Mr Herron is Head of S2 and Mr Ross is Head of S4.

St Matthew's Academy is a denominational school and, as such, seeks to be a centre of excellence providing the highest possible quality of education in a Catholic community where care, cooperation and mutual respect are at the centre of everything they do. They want to give all the members of their community the opportunity and encouragement to achieve their full potential.

The state-of-the-art teaching facilities in St Matthew's Academy include interactive whiteboard technology and pupil computers in every teaching area. Well-equipped staff bases are located within main teaching areas and there are tutorial rooms on each floor for individual and small group use. The school is also provided with extensive sports facilities (including a full-size synthetic pitch, an athletics track and a fitness suite), a 400-seat theatre/auditorium and a central social area for pupils.[1]

History[]

The school first opened on 29 October 2007 following the merger of pupils from St Andrews Academy, Saltcoats and St Michael's Academy, Kilwinning. As of January 2019 the school roll is 1250 thus making it the second largest school in North Ayrshire [2] The catchment area of the school encompasses all of North Ayrshire. The most recent inspection from Education Scotland has rated the school as "very good" for Learning, Teaching and Assessment and for Raising Attainment and Achievement.[3]

Associated primaries[]

The roll of St Matthew's Academy is drawn in the main from the ten cluster denominational primary schools located throughout North Ayrshire: St John Ogilvie's and St Mark's in Irvine; St Winning's and St Luke's in Kilwinning; St John's in Stevenston; St Anthony's in Saltcoats; St Peter's in Ardrossan; St Mary's in Largs; St Bridget's in Kilbirnie; and St Palladius' in Dalry. Pupils from all areas other than Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston travel to St Matthew's Academy by contract bus.[1]

School uniform[]

St Matthew's Academy has a school uniform which encourages and supports a sense of identification with the school. All pupils, therefore, are expected to wear uniform at all times. The uniform for St Matthew's Academy is as follows:

white shirt / blouse;

school tie (striped for S1 – S4; crested for S5 – S6);

black skirt / trousers;

black jumper / cardigan;

school blazer with badge

black shoes.

Trousers and skirts should be smart and modest and extremes of fashion should be avoided. Hipsters, denims, shorts, tracksuit trousers and casual trousers are not permitted. Jumpers and cardigans should be plain (i.e. no logos) and should allow the school tie to be visible. All items of clothing should be clearly labelled with the child's name in case of loss.

This school dress code has been agreed through consultation with parents.

Both the crested and striped school ties will be available for direct purchase from the school at very reasonable prices. A fitting and ordering service for school blazers will take place prior to the summer break.

Parents receiving jobseeker's allowance or income support, family credit, housing benefit or council tax rebate will normally be entitled to grants for footwear and clothing for their children. Information and application forms may be obtained from schools or from Education & Skills, Cunninghame House, Irvine, KA12 8EE.
