A statue of William III of England stands at outside Kensington Palace in London. The bronze statue was designed by and given as a gift to King Edward VII by his nephew Wilhelm II, German Emperor. It is a copy of another statue of William at the Kronprinzenpalais in Berlin.[1] The pedestal was designed by Aston Webb, who would go on to create the Victoria Memorial in London.[2] A popular story states that the design of the character Captain Hook was inspired by the statue.[1] The statue is a Grade II Listed Building, having been listed on 15 April 1969.[3]
The front of the pedestal bears the following inscription:[2]
William III of Orange, King of Great Britain and Ireland presented by William II, German Emperor and King of Prussia to King Edward VII for the British nation. 1907.
